Tidal Size For 46g

I'm setting up a 46 gallon bowfront I have. I will be using a Fluval 306 canister, and want to add a Tidal HOB. I was thinking about a Tidal 75, but Ken's is out of them. They have 55's and 110's. My question is, would a 110 be overkill? At full flow, it would add a lot of current, but I can always turn the flow down, and there is a lot more room for media in it. What do you think? The 55 would probably be sufficient, and is almost $20 less. But in this case is "more is better"?

I run a Fluval 406 and an AC70 on my 55 so I think you would get some good filtration with the 306 and the T55. Unless you want to wait for some Tidal users to chime in. I haven't used the Tidals yet. Good luck! What are your stocking plans?

I'd buy the Tidal 110. Yeah, its overkill but it won't hurt anything, and sooner or later you'll probably upgrade your setup to a bigger tank. Most of us do. You'll be happy you already have the bigger filter.

I have a Tidal 35 on my 26 bowfront (in addition to a Fluval 206), and I really like the features of the Tidal. As for stocking, I haven't made any decisions yet. I thought about a cichlid tank, as I really like them. I've always wanted to try shell dwellers. But cichlids can really tear up a tank. This will be my first time using black sand. I've only ever used natural sand up till now.

You're right, of course. I would like to have another 55, as I like the length of them. 55 isn't all that much bigger than 46, but with only a 306 canister, the 110 would be better.

Post pics and use this as your build thread interested to see what you go with as far as filtration and stocking. If you do go with cichlids I would probably take A201 advice and go larger with the filtration. Never had chiclids yet but sometimes over stocking curves some aggression so the extra filtration will definitely come in handy!

I think you would appreciate the footprint of a 75 much more and if your saying you have a 55 already why not go a bit larger. Just saying Your welcome
Edit sorry mods didn't realize I double posted. My bad!

Shellies won't tear up your tank. Look at Yellow Rock Kribs. They are a small, very colorful Lake Victoria Hap Cichlid. I just set up a colony of those. IMO, more active than Shell Dwellers.

I've been working on cleaning. I had the 46 for a few years, and recently replaced it with a 65. I was going to give the 46 to a friend, but she decided it was too big. Then I was just going to give it away to anyone who wanted it, but decided to set it up. The top of it was pretty gross, as I have a lot of scale in my water here. So I've been working on cleaning the glass lids. I've used three different scrapers, and vinegar and water with a super coarse scrubber. It's not perfect, but it is a lot better, and I think good enough. The light fixture sits on the rectangular glass, so as long as it passes light, I should be good. I picked up the black sand yesterday, but still have a lot more cleaning to do. There is still a little of the natural sand I had in it, but I'll vacuum that out with a shopvac.

Like I said, I still have a lot more cleaning to do, and I haven't decided on the stocking yet. Part of it will be what is available at my LFS. I'm also toying with the idea of going with driftwood and live plants. Never done that before. Do you have any photos of your cichlids?

I have a Tidal 75 on a 40 gallon. I also have 2 sponges rated for 20-40 gallons as well, but I'm kinda overstocked with 19 adult and 6 juvenile cory catfish. Depends on your stock really, but I would go as big as you can.

Oh! I'm an idiot, I read your post wrong. I would go with the 110.

I'll probably go with the 110. It would be silly not to, since the sale price is the same as what the 75's usually sell for.

I'll be starting a thread in the build section once I get the cleaning out of the way. And yes, I've thought about a 75. Same length, but taller and wider.

I just ordered the Tidal 110 from Ken's. I think I'll be glad I did.

Have you used an actual razor on your lid that will clear it up perfect I’m sure and if your worried about scratching it u can always try on a small edge of it. Just a thought. I cleaned spray paint off my 29 with a razor blade on Sunday and not one scratch mark to be seen

The Tidal 110 is a good choice, I have a pair on my 75g. and just ordered one for my 29g. I should have received it already if not for Tropical Storm Imelda and all the flooding in Houston.

Yes, I've used two razor blade scrapers. They were marginal on the white scale. Glass doesn't scratch easily.

Here's a pic of one of my Yellow Rock Kribs.

That's a good looking fish. I'll see what my LFS has.

I looked at replacing them. $60 from my LFS. I also thought about seeing if a glass company could cut new pieces. But at this point, I think it's fine. I can always replace them later if necessary. And no, I would never have an aquarium without a lid.

You can't over filter your water. Filtration is the name of the game. The more BB colonies you have the healthier your water will be and fish. Alternate filter maintenance and you won't be over working yourself. I run two filters on all of our tanks.

I have the Tidal 55 on my 20 gallon and love it. Lots of room to customize media. I would recommend the 75 as a minimum, but that may be enough with the 306.
