This can't be an Amano baby....... Can it?!

devsi

While I was looking over my Freshwater tank this morning, I noticed at least 4 baby shrimp that look just like my Amanos.

But I was under the impression they can't reproduce in Freshwater; and they require Brackish, so colour me confused!

Is this just a shrimp that looks like an Amano, or have my shrimp done the impossible!?

I'm guessing you have ghost shrimp. Amano don't hatch in Freshwater like you said.

Funny, when my RCS had their first brown culls, I thought the same incredulous thing a few minutes when I saw them! Never expected browns! What a waste to see my female amanos so very pregnant over and over, and know they'll all die. Last week I saw a female very empty and felt sad....again.

Weird, I only introduced Cherry and Amano shrimp! I guess it’s possible some hitchhiked on a plant though….

Thanks StarGirl !

I really think it's a red cherry that turned out brown, and those are "culls". Neocaridinas are bred for their color but sometimes revert back to their native color. To continue your line of color, you remove the culls so they don't interbreed. I have a separate cull tank, and as they breed, all kinds of beautiful colors come out. Those who don't care about the purity of their lines leave them with the reds or blues, whatever color they have.

These are 2nd generation culls. The ones I'd remove from the tank were brown, clear or light red. Then the culls breed and I've had different lighter shades of red, spotted red, red and white, black, black and white, etc.

Sorry Marlene327 - I completely missed this message; I must have replied as you were replying and didn't get the notification!

To be fair, since I got my Cherrys, I've seen all sorts of weird and wonderful colours; black with a yellow stripe, yellow with a black stripe, yellow, blue, clear.

Shame most of them get eaten haha.

Ah yeah I don't care what they look like; I certainly don't want to cull them :)

They are awesome! Once upon a time, I was hoping to be overrun by RCS!

I used to have reds in my 40 gallon and blues in my 20. I have no idea why but after a year they just started disappearing. I was glad I'd saved culls in a 10 gallon. Now I'm setting up a new one for them they don't have to share with other wayward fish. I want to get some culls from someone in here when I'm ready, and try reds or blues again in my 40 gallon. I do enjoy seeing them all one color in a nice group of 10 or more, but funny how I've fallen in love with the "lesser thans" so much! They're amazing, and I'm jealous of your black and yellows! (I'm a Steelers fan!) Maybe I'll get lucky and get that one day. Just a very dark black one was fun to have, but he disappeared. :(

Enjoy!!

Oh I think I might have misunderstood what you meant by "culls"; I assumed you meant you cull (kill) them?

Hmmm. I actually have a 25 Litre I used to use for cultivating Daphnia, that I've been meaning to clean out and re-purpose or sell.

Maybe I should make it a shrimp/snail tank.

Haha yeah - I love seeing all the different colour variations!

I'll be honest, I had to look up what Steelers is :) If I ever see him again, I'll try and get a good picture!

My money is on it being an off color cherry.

I'm terrible at shrimp ID. Lol I just knew it wasn't a Amano.

You're better than me, so it was still helpful :)

Sorry, I didn't notice at the time where you were... the Pittsburgh Steelers is our football team! I'm in the eastern US in Pennsylvania.

I just recently had a similar situation in my tank. 3 babies when I only have amanos. I am guessing that I either got a ghost or 2 or a couple clear cherries that had babies. They actually look very similar to your picture.
