I tried explaining to my boyfriend why I like bettas and it was like talking to a brick wall. Now he loves his puffer because it shares a lot of the cute personality traits of a betta which is what confuses me. He thought I was crazy for getting a second betta (only a second?) I just don't understand it. Have you guys ever had such trouble with people not understanding that bettas are indeed the best freshwater fish ever?

I haven't had that happen to me because I never said to anyone that bettas are the best Freshwater fish.

Some people have different opinions.

But Bettas RULE!!! that's my opinion.

I think a problem with most people is that they have the mentality that "It's JUST a fish!" Of course, some people are like that with most animals. Some just don't get that you can interact with animals and develop REAL relationships with them, especially fish.

Just my two cents.

The reason we have so many different beautiful freshwater tanks and varied environments is because we all have our own ideas of what is and is not the best.  The thing that makes this forum so great is that no matter what someone is into in the fish world there is a great chance there is going to be someone who agrees with them.  If you all wanted bettas or neons or gouramis or angels or any other type of fish to the exclusion of the other kinds, what a boring world the whole world of fishkeeping would be.  Thank God there is room for us all.

This is such a wonderful world that we live in and the variety is so phenomenal that it spices up the lives of us all.  We do not have to even keep the fish we are not interested in owning to appreciate them as someone else can show us in their experience what great fish they are without us having to own them.  I love the looks of a lot of fish but have neither the room or inclination to own them but I am oh so glad to know people who do as I can live vicariously through them and have the next best thing.

Bettas are WONDERFUL fish and you all KNOW that I love them, but it truly depends on the person keeping the fish whether or not they are the best freshwater fish.  Some people would not make good betta parents as they do not want to have a personal relationship with their fish...they just want fish to swim and be decorative.  They are not mean and malicious, just of a different personality.  There are fish that fit them quite well and do not want to be more than that.  They studiously ignore the humans who own them except at feeding time.  BUT thank you God for the people who want them and will care for them.  I have no problem with them or anyone else as long as they take care of the fish that they decide to own.

Enough of my editorial, but I hope you know what I mean.

I don't mind people disagreeing with my likes, dislikes, and opinions as long as they agree to allow me to have those likes, dislikes, and opinions.  But that works both ways - I have to also respect that others have likes, dislikes, and opinions that differ from my own.  (For me that's sometimes hard to do where politics are concerned, though.   ;D)

I don't care much for politics.

It doesn't matter to me if democrats take over. (What is the big deal with that?!?!  ???)

gammerus my boyfriend absolutely loves Zen. At first he was like, 'eh, no biggie, it's a fish.' I didn't balk, I just asked him to feed him his brine shrimp treat a few times a week. Once Ed was face to face with the wiggle of love, over and over, he was smitten. Heh. Zen makes Ed laugh out loud. Ed would get a Betta except he has a 45 gallon tank (soon to be set up) and he doesn't want his choice of fish to be too limiting.

If I get the chance though I'm going to get him a 10 gallon so he can have a Betta too.

So, my guy is a mush and I love him so much for it (he also blessed FIVE strays, 4 are babies, on his porch since xmas eve and contributes to their care).

I am blessed and I know it
