The Tale Of Kevin The Rescue Betta

Hello all . The picture below is of Kevin. We never intended to get a Betta, but I'm sure enjoying having him.

We purchased a 30 gallon tank off FB Marketplace. There was no mention of fish in the tank, and no pictures containing fish. On our way to get the tank, I got the message that they forgot to tell me it had fish in it, one of which was a Betta. We grabbed a few buckets so we could transfer a big chunk of water, as well as the fish. Unfortunately they had already drained all but two inches of water out of the tank. They had gotten the tank used from someone else, and said that's how they moved the tank before.

Naturally when we got home and set the tank up, there was a mass die off due to shock, and also because as they they had only used ultra filtered water that they purchased from the store. The surviving fish were the Betta, 2 Siamese Algae Eaters, and an albino Bristlenose Pleco.

We went and got a 10 gallon setup and cycled it and gave the Betta time to settle before transfer again. He's happy now and loving his new home. I named him Kevin. I have no idea how old he is. He's kind of beat up looking, but it just adds to his personality.

Poor Kevin! Awesome of you to take him in and make him comfy again! He looks pretty old maybe? Keep us posted - I'd love to see if he colors up again.

Awww! I may have a grumpy old man fish. Lol.

I will do that. He's still pretty active, and his eyes are nice and dark, but physical wear and coloring would suggest an old fogey. Well, whatever his age, he's not going anywhere. I think he munched the two Cherry Shrimp that we had in there, but he doesn't give two hoots about the ghost shrimp. I didnt realize how interesting Betta could be before.

They have so much personality packed into those little bodies. All of ours race to the front of the tank when they see you enter the room. The one in my bedroom waits by the food hole and makes clicking sounds when he sees the food container. Ounce for ounce I really think bettas rival the larger cichlids for intelligence and interactivity!

Nothing wrong with grumpy old men fish....perhaps he can yell at the kids to get off the lawn for you!

The ghost shrimp are pretty big. They may be old too. I guess it's the retirement community now. The snails are babies, and were obtained unintentionally, so they probably just yell at the snails. Also, I think I may need sleep.

Update:
I'm not sure Kevin is as old as previously thought. He's pretty active and making some beautiful bubble nests!
