The start of dropsy on betta?

Hello while ive been in the aquarium hobby for a long time, I just joined this forum. Most of my tanks are saltwater but this tank is one of my 2 freshwater. Its been up and running for about 6 years I think.

After loosing my 2 year old betta to dropsy 2 years ago i didn’t want to loose my newest one to dropsy too. Ive added this betta 2 weeks ago. The tank is 20 gallons with shrimp, neons, and some guppies. The betta does not chase after the other inhabitant and is mostly content. Although it did come in a bit thin. No problem with the flow of the tank.

well now im not sure if he ate too much, is bloated, or might have dropsy. I didn’t want to loose another betta to late realization of dropsy again. Does this look like dropsy to any of you? Might be worrying about nothing but better be safe than sorry. I tend to grow attached to my fishes.

I would try fasting 3-4 days, if bloated should take care of it, and maybe try an epsom salt bath. Doesn't really look like pineconing to me, but that left side does look like some sort of ripple. Doesn't look like dropsy-type bloat, but between fasting and the epsom salt bath, might help clear up whatever is going on. Obviously if symptoms get worse, may need to do something else.

Will be fasting then. I have some salt on the hand just in case.

Welcome to Fishlore!

He's a pretty boy, by the way!

I would keep an eye on those neons, just to make sure that they don't nip his fins. They do have that reputation... :)

Thank you, fortunately the neons don’t really pay attention to him. And he doesn’t care about the other fishes either, hopefully it stays that way.
