Just curious, was there genetic issues? Some appear to have very hunched backs. I don't know a darn thing about breeding.... Betta? Lol that's how much I know. don't tank offense to my question please.

No hunched backs, their top lines for the most part are pretty good. They may appear to be hunched on the males I’m holding out of water, it’s the best way to keep them still. Only genetic problems I’ve had in this spawn is slight tail kinks and a couple had vision problems. Plus the usual few that developed pigment tumors as is common in koi strains.

Moved the next pair into the spawning tank! They are still separated by a divider, waiting for the male to make a nest. One of the female kois and my male from the blue marble line. Neither one is perfect in form but their spines and fins are straight and I like their colors. I simply want to continue my blue marble line.

Babies from the pair above are free swimming and were given their first feeding of vinegar eels and paramecium today.

I originally thought the spawn was a a bust, I saw eggs but no fry in the nest and dad wasn’t keeping up on the bubbles nesting. I guess he was just lazy and kept them hidden in the hornwort. It’s a small spawn from what I can see but it is hard to tell because of the hornwort. Dad is still with them and being a good boy, I plan to move him in another week or so (have to play musical tanks after I ship out a few other males).

Putting an end to this thread with a recap of the koi spawn. Overall, I am not too happy with this spawn. A lot of tail kinks, a few tumors, some with blindness and not very many kois. I did discover the cause of blindness, ocular albinism. It can happen in bettas when they marble, the loss and development of pigmentation during the process also effects their eyes and not just the skin. There’s a very good youtube video to explain it better.

The gender mix is about even at 21 males and 20ish females. Only 3 males and 6 females were proper kois, most other were cellophane marbles and solid blue. Here’s some of them.











The is the best females who I have a few fry from and may breed from again. She’s a big girl.



Working on the next generation, there were about a dozen fry from the koi female. I moved them out and into a 5gal with other fry, they are eating BBS and looking very cute. I am starting a new thread as this one has run it’s course. The new thread will cover the marble male’s spawns (he got a new girlfriend!).
