The Perfect Betta Pair

Demeter

I’m starting a new betta breeding thread as the other one is quite out dated and lengthy.

This is the main man, a handsome boy I bred, born close to a year ago.

DDB959C0-7EFF-43D4-97E5-B03DD5B8C72D.jpeg

This lovely lady was found while browsing ebay, she was quite cheap (18$ shipped) and looks like the male’s long lost twin.

2FBCD814-4B93-4D50-9E19-911A831C6727.jpeg
They have not spawned but they are in the same 10gal with a divider. Both are showing interest in the other.

The male has spawned twice before with his younger aunt, he was just separated from the last spawn so some extra feedings are in order. Hopefully in a week or two they’ll be eager to breed.

Side notes:
- male is a non halfmoon PK, possible recessive HM genes (judging from his apparent long finned son)
- female is a HMPK
-male has slightly crooked pelvic fins.

Wow. That is a perfect pair!!

Demeter

2/8/20 We have eggs!

A nice sized nest under an IAL. I expect quite a few eggs based on the size of the female. She’s also helping to collect eggs the male misses.

More pics of the parents.

Micro worm culture is ready and I’ve got BBS as I’m feeding a slightly older spawn.

Demeter

Took ~2-3hrs with no notable damage to either parent.

Lots of eggs if you can see them. Hopefully dad does just as good as he did the last 2 times.

No pictures but fry are free swimming as of yesterday. Dad is still with them and they’re getting micro worms and BBS.

Their mom for reference (same dad). She’s a huge and so was her mom, odd shaped head but I like her.

Spawn B from the lovely marbled girl, 1 week old.

Not a huge size different between the 2, they’ll be getting ~3 25% water changes per week.

At what age can you sell them?

Demeter

At what age can you sell them?

Depends on how fast they grow for me. 3-4 months minimum, 5-6 months seems to be my average. I’ve got a few I wouldn’t mind selling right now but I just haven’t gotten around to listing them. I never have much luck selling bettas anyways, mine aren’t usually lookers and the few that are I end up keeping!

Amazoniantanklvr

What do you end up doing with them then?

Demeter

What do you end up doing with them then?

Unsold docile females go in my sorority tank. I’ve also given some away, some go to a pet store for store credit and the not so pretty ones or deformed ones are culled and fed to my axolotl after being euthanized. Not particularly a glorious ending but better than being stuck in jars their entire lives, plus free food for Lemonade. It’s not for profit right now, just a hobby.

I’m working on developing my own personal line, the plan is to eventually get nice quality bettas that people will actually want to spend a little extra on and have them shipped. I have little doubt that if I were to list my breeders for sale they would get sold, so hopefully their young will do the same.

I’ve already established a good line of OB peacock cichlids that are selling well, bettas are apparently a bit more complicated to get a line established. It’s been a learning process to say the least. I’ve come a long way from were I started.

Demeter

Last night the marbled female died of unknown causes. She was acting a little lethargic so I moved her to a specimen container with some methylene blue before I went to work. Came back home and she had just passed. Thankfully she has lots of babies to carry on her genes. They’re starting to accept decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, makes it easier on me.

The younger batch (B spawn) is a month old now and looking great. Biggest ones have tiny pelvic fins, most are eating HikarI first bites and decapsulated brine shrimp eggs along with the BBS.

Last pic is amazing! Good luck! You are doing a great job!

Demeter

I moved some fry around, most of both spawns went into a 20gal, runts are staying in one of the 10gals. While moving spawn B I noticed something pretty terrible.

Two thing strands of silicone sealant had pealed away and several fry thought they would make a good snack. They were literally stuck mouth to vent as the strand was being pooped out. All are still alive but very stressed, I cut them apart very carefully, all they can do is poop it out and hopefully recover.

Forgot to mention I move 10 of spawn A into a 36gal a couple weeks ago. They were the biggest and are growing fast.

Demeter

Some not great pictures of the little ones. The larger fry with color are from spawn A. The big guy is obviously male and seems to be long finned. Spawn B is starting to get color too, I’ve noticed many have very nice body and fin structure. Many are starting to marble in this tank too. They are also going throw a mild bout of ich, the heat treatment has killed off most of it with no fish losses. I have culled some that had odd body shapes and a couple had swim bladder issues.

The runts and the ones that ate silicone threads are in a 10gal. They seem to be having some sort of protozoan issue. Clamped fins, slight film on the edges of the fins. They’ll be getting paraguard soon as it gets here from chewy. No pics if them, just know that the fry that ate silicone seem to of survived.

There was about an equal number of females, around 30 or so. I sold all but 4, two of which may become future breeders. Note that the koi is not one of them, she’s supposed to be paired to the male koi in previous posts but she has been uncooperative with him.

I tried to cull more strickly in these spawns, at a guess I’d say 1/4 or so of the total number of fry to survive to a decent size where culled. A good percentage had curved spines towards their tails and some had odd gills. Some of the males pictures above also have a slight kink at the base of their tail but it’s hard to tell. Overall I’m pretty happy with the turnout. Lots of colors, most were marbles, not too much red and many have the HM tail ray branching (their dad does not).

Perfect pair part 2!

I’ve had a pair of koi glaxies that finally spawned last night. Only took them 3 separate tries.

Male is from ebay, he has curly pelvic fins and is on the smaller side but his colors and fins are nice otherwise. Note that this is an old picture from when I got him, his colors are much darker now. Female came from philam and marbled out into a lovely koi.

The male was very gentle, too gentle which is probably why it took so long. Lots of eggs and seems to be tending to them very well. I have mature paramecium cultures and vinegar eels for first foods. Hopefully he gets them to free swimming. Fuzzy photo is more clear if you click on it.

Omg! Definitely following this thread! I’d love to see some offsprings from my spawn. This is actually the first one that I know of that one of my baby is being used for spawning.

Demeter

Took dad away from the kids. I saw he had a bloated belly around the time the eggs started hatching. He took good care of the ones that hatched but it seems he ate the majority of the eggs. Not sure if those eggs were duds or not but I’d say there are around 20-30 fry. Depending on how many there are I may try again later. Right now it’s about time to separate out some vinegar eels.

My camera can’t focus on them so no pictures. Only thing to note is their color. All my past spawns had dark fry, most of these look very light.

Demeter

Babies are eating BBS and looking good. Still all light colored so far. Both parents are 100% recovered just so you know.

I set the parents up again as the mom was looking overly plump, like egg bound plump and I was worried. They are together right now but we’ll see in a day or two if they breed. I’m trying a different way of spawning in a much smaller container, so far they seem receptive of each other.

Demeter

Round 2 is a go for the koi pair. I didn’t even know if they bred until I was about to do a water change and saw some free swimmers. The female doesn’t really look any thinner and there doesn't seem to be too many in this spawn but time will tell. I took dad out and added some paramecium to the fry tub.

It’s a little 1.5ish gal container with IAL, only a couple fry can be seen floating around. Worked pretty well IMO. I hope to move these little ones into either a 5 or 10gal once I move out the other betta/rainbow fry in the next few days.

Moved the older koi spawn into a 7.5gal cube that has a few rainbow and danio fry. I kept the other fry in there to help them fogure out solid foods, good thing is they mostly had that figured out in the other tank. They are all a varying shade of lighter blue so far, waiting for that to change in the next month or so.
I counted 43 total, 12 runts were moved into a 5gal with other small fry. Noticed one has a bent tail.

The younger spawn is now 10 days free swimming and they were moved to the 10gal. Eating vinegar eels and banana worms, working on getting BBS hatched now.

Side note: the female passed away a few days after spawning. She had only a couple split fins that didn't look infected. I think she wasn’t able to pass or reabsorb the left over eggs. She was definitely still plump and the younger spawn looks even smaller than the first one. I’m not too happy about it, she was a nice betta.

Bonus picture of my boy, he’s the male in the first post of this thread. He’s not ill, just staring down a pellet and looking like an old male (he’s passed his prime now).

The younger spawn is getting some color now. I’d guess there are less than 20 in this batch. No pictures because I’m lazy.

Lastly, a couple shots of the male I’ll probably keep from the marble spawn. He almost looks like a white based koi but I don’t think that’s a thing? His fins are unimpressive but he has a big body and nice color.

I don’t know if I want to continue the marble line, the male I originally wanted to breed from started showing the skin tumors common in heavily pigmented strains. I have seen this in a few other fish in older related spawns so it’s likely genetic. I could outcross with an unrelated female. We’ll see.

The tumor is very common On the galaxy line or the strains that has a lot of white scales. For example, the blue marble dragon, white fccp etc. they usually start showing up as they matured. That’s just genetics problem. Also that’s a beefy male that you are keeping! Lol

Demeter

Moved the younger spawn into the 7.4gal as I needed the 10gal for quarantine. I did count them but completely forgot what it was. Less than 20. Also noticed some were having nipped fins, just the dorsal and the top end of the tail. Saw some of the forktail fry doing the nipping and have since moved them out. Little snots.

Some of the older juveniles are being really stupid. When I toss in sinking food for the pleco fry they end up eating some of the course sand and can’t swim properly. Here’s what came out of one yesterday.

The same fish did it again shortly after so it’s being confined to a floating breeder box for now.

Still no koi markings, just some faded colors and a little red wash in the analfins. Most still look like this.

Update on dad, he’s doing great and I saw a bubble nest which rarely happens in this 10gal. He’s a very chill boy.

Sofiafish17

Koi markings or no, that one is beautiful! I have never bred anything myself, I wish I could but I have rules because of my housing situation. I LOVE that color blue, he/she (can’t tell from that certain pic) is almost like a periwinkle. Wish I could have a second betta!

Demeter

They are started to marble now! One has turned completely cellophane and 2 or 3 others are fading out.

Still have issues with a couple bettas wanting to eat sand. The fat one on the bottom. I’ll probably move them over to a 20gal with pea gravel so they stop being stupid.

7 males are separated out, 2 of which are marbling nicely. Will get pictures of them next time.

Here’s one female who is looking pretty good but still marbling, only complaint is her top line.

I just received 3 blue marble females, planning to grow them out and pair one with my male. They are just a little smaller than my female above. Possible breeder male pictured last.

Second koi spawn is still looking good, probably doing better than the first spawn because they are not with other species. They are outgrowing the 7.4gal and need to be moved.

Demeter

Moved some little ones around yesterday and took a few photos. The two females with clean white color are not part of the koi spawn. You can also see some kinks in the tails on some of the fish.

There are still 10 bettas in a 29gal and the other spawn is still in the 7.4gal. I was going to move them but ran out of time.

The blue rim female I bought started being a snot and blew a bubble nest. It has since been separated but still looks like a girl to me.

I have no motivation to photo shoot the males, just assume they are adorable.

Pictures of the second koi spawn. There’s about 15 of them, a few are marbling and a few females are pretty apparent (to me anyways).

A few males, not too much in terms of koi patterns. A handful of others are turning all cellophane, several are till completely blue. Yet again, many have slight crooks in their tails, like the very pretty one below.

These two boys were just separated out today. The cellophane is from the younger spawn.

Following!! Why didn’t I know you breed bettas?

Demeter

Here’s some females! There are probably some males mixed in, the bright white one is part of the blue rim trio. Lots of marbling, so far one female and one male have developed the genetic tumor/growths common in certain betta strains. I’ll have to get photos of them next time.

It looks like all three of these supposed female blue rims are actually males. This is another one blowing bubbles and he was moved to a separate tank. I’ve heard of females turning male but all three at once? They did have egg spots and the plump belly when I got them. I’m not sure what happened.

Bonus of a male from the last spawn, debating on breeding him with one of the koi females.

Wish my guppy would protect the fry! He just seems to like to eat them.

Demeter

The results of the koi babies are coming along great! All but a few males are now separated. I hope to start shipping them out after I get more insulation and boxes.

The best 2 kois, I’d say the first is the only true galaxy koi so far. Too bad he has a slight tail kink that rules him out as a breeder.

A few of the others, there are about 6 blues and 3 cellophanes who hopefully marble out.

One of the blue rim “females”. All 3 are for sure males, one has yet to be separated but soon.

Then some dead fish pics to show genetic problems in this spawn. The two cellophanes were pretty much blind for some reason. They were runty as the others outcompeted them for food. Then the blue female who has a fast growing tumor that was starting to become an open wound. Comparing her eyes with the other you can see the difference. After euthanasia they were fed to my axolotl.
