The Panda Garra

This blog will be to monitor the growth and development of my newest addition, an inch long Panda Garra.

Despite my researching, there is very little varying information out there about these guys, so this'll be a learning process the whole way though. I'm unsure if they are schoolers, or solitary fish, but I think I will be getting a few more, regardless. Some sites say they like to be in groups, others don't say at all. I'm also hoping he'll develop some red in his fins, like most of the pictures show. If anyone has any info on them, please share!

He's real small, and spunky and determined. I've given him and the shrimp he's QT'd with some bloodworms, and even thought he can't quite figure out how to eat them, but he's not giving up

Well, I guess that's not too far out of a thought LOL My guppies used to poop bright red when they got red colored food

Also, he's figured out how to get the red juice out from inside them, and his colors drastically darkened Now that he's full, and not eating anymore, he has dulled back down some.

He's starting to, yeah lol Its funny watching him. While he's eating, he'll get real dark grey, almost a charcoal, and then when he's not, he lightens back.

I don't like how young he is, but if he wasn't this small, I wouldn't have been able to get him, so its a bit a two sided situation LOL

Update on the little guy:

Great colors today, nice and dark, and starting to show the *slightest* bit of pink in his tail!!! =D He's eating some ZooMed Aquatic Shrimp, Crab and Lobster Food pellets. Pics in a bit

Thanks! You should google them and see what they look like full grown. EVEN CUTER!!!

LOL Its just a PetCo version of a Kritter Keeper. I doubt that they'd make a trip over-sea's as it is! Its not quite as sturdy as an actual Kritter Keeper. But I do try to buy things that are made in the US and/or from companies that don't endorse much animal testing. I'm also trying to get into more organic and natural things, but on my college type budget, its not always possible @.@

Amazing cute little guy!! Looking forward to watching him grow!

Thanks, me too! =D

I'll add music and the pics when I'm back in my room.

Have you tried putting your foot in or your hand in to see if he eats your dead skin and improves your complexion yet?

I got one of these given to me the other week (my friend moved back to Scotland), definitely a nice looking fish, mine does well on its own, nobody bothers him and he just swims around up and down the glass

I figured they were used along those lines when you said to stick my feet in there

LOL! When I went to China 2 years ago, I went to this natural hot spring spa. They had a pool of those doctor fish and their bite was ticklish.

Nice looking Garra. Not too much info on them that I have. I do know they prefer to be in groups of 4. Even when they are full grown. When they are younger they swarm in groups 100s of fish but when they get older they separate into smaller groups usually ranging from 3 to 14 fish.

BTW Garras only 'eat skin' when they are starving. So basically what these spas do is they keep a group of fish in a tank and don't feed them for a couple of days. Then they put them in ponds or containers in which people sit in and then the fish eat the dead skin because there is nothing else to eat. After that they are fed a large meals for a couple of days and the process begins again. Not a very nice process IMO. I refused to sell any Garras or similar fish to any sort of 'spa' facility when I stilled owned my fish business. Just my input on the whole matter LOL.

Did you ever have any full grown Panda Garras? How big were they? When I get home I'll be getting him a few buddies for sure.

That's not very nice D=

Yep I had a group of 12 that I collected in streams around the Bay of Bengal. My largest adults were bordering around four inches.

Dang LOL I've seen from 2 to 4 inches, so guess that's actually right, for once What all did you feed them? I've seem some places say all they need is algae, and others say that they don't hardly eat algae at all.

Nice pictures!! I kept mine ina pond mostly. So I couldn't monitor what all they ate. I'd say some of each but mostly algae.

Oooh, ok LOL Hm... that explains the lack of shrimp in with him... Used to be 10 or 15 in there, but now there are about 1/2 that much XD Tomorrow I will give him an algae wafer, rather than the meaty stuff I've been giving him =3
