The Fish Room

I am so jealous. My "fishroom" is my office with 6 tanks (working on the 100+, but it will be a while) with a chair and a computer. My desk has been entirely tanken over by tanks. My crash pad is a dog cushion.

Well redid the 150G still going heres some pictures was going to with my normal cichlid stocking ways but dam mate at the LFS told me a awasome stock so far loving it few more fish to pick up tomorrow (ease the bioload out) but yeah very happy with it, the scape took me about 30 minutes to do and pretty happy with it need 2 more plants and its great, might add some plant onto the driftwood and a few little grass ones in the front area but overall going to stick with this.

heres the complete stock not sure about the flag tail and BGK but rest are defs.

tinfoils. -5

roselines -6

flag tail (feI fang) -1

silver sharks 4-5

some schooling fish ( tiger barbs - lemons - rummys depends)

few more clowns

maybe A BGK and an angel

I know its over stocked dw I have plans for tanks to move the clowns over etc they are too small atm.

Hi!

I was wondering where you'd disappeared to .

Looks good. I only see a couple of issues with the stocking. The Flagtail will get up to 14" so you want to watch out for that. A 150 is what I consider the minimum size for them so I think you should be okay haha. Good thing you're only getting one because they can be aggressive towards their own kind unless in a huge tank in large groups. Because Flagtails and Tinfoils look so similar you want to watch out and make sure the Flagtail doesn't bother your Tinfoils. I wouldn't get Black Ghost Knifefish. Your aquascape isn't quite right for one. They need lots and lots of caves and tunnels in which they can hide during the day. Also they'll eat any schooling fish you get. The same goes for the Flagtail I believe.

Glad to see your still at it, I had also wondered where you had gone hiding to... Guess it was school and work lol.

I agree with rouge on that but then again it isn't like you have a shortage of tanks coming online soon either.

Thanks guys! Yeah I have been busy with work and school! had all these exams to get done nothing fun =(!

Thanks for that also rouge&pirahnah there is very little info on feI fangs/ flag tails, I have heard some will go for slime coats if not feed well and schooling them is super hard in your average aquarium also. Hopefully the tins are going to be ok, they seem to be kept with balas which look like flag tails also so hopefully all goes well!

I believe tiger barbs and lemons would be too large for the flag tail to eat else they have a jaguar like mouth? rummys eh I guess they might have to be moved when older lol. I guess the BGK is a miss, I really want one but can't see any fish I own that won't kill the poor guy lol!

p.s I got 4 more the 4x2x2s setup but the sump was not level and cracked, so I am trying to fight with the stands and sump getting them leveled with rust proof metal sheets but its not easy and I have lifted this one stand so much I feel it might break soon =(! apart from that little happened, added my blackbelt, dovii, frens with my jardinI and been cleaning tanks !

Yeah cleaning tanks amazing job! silly plecos pay all this money for them and they can't even change water for me !!!

Got some roselines today, was going to get balas but mate at the LFS is going to come up with some better ideas his words where don't add lower class fish to an A class tank xD! I guess show grade tinfoils and roselines are pretty high standard school fish! Anyone wanna give a shot at some stock? Need something to add with the clowns looking for a lower movement that's a bit like different? and something for the top area, some smaller schooling fish and a center fish like a larger but peaceful fish that just chills out, its a pain setting this tank up so far as all the fish I can think of cost an arm and leg here for decent schools but so far I am really happy with it, the whole tank is so active and alive just what I wanted its not like a fed me and I will swim to you tank its just a 24.7 look over here and we are going to be partying lol xD

Rainbows, plain and simple, they are some of my favorite fish for larger tanks now. I used to want the bala sharks (and still wouldn't mind them) but after having put some rainbows in the tank they are so much fun! They also get big given the space, and look great schooling!

mmm I have 1 rainbow in there atm, plan to get a few more but still not really what I am looking for.

I saw a long fish today black and yellow strips was about 15 cm lfs didnt know what it was they wanted 180 for it but I don't believe they are very rare? I have seen them before a few times they get quite large might add one of them anyone know the name? they go with the clowns and tigers stripe wise.

then the balas go with the tinfoils adding some black, all I need then is some schooling fish for the middle rummys?

some fancy cheapish pleco ( gold nugget etc) Thinking of some featherfins (african black catfish with dots) I don't believe in all that PH stuff after seeing a friend breed discus in 8 ph water its put me off lol.

some more rainbows and maybe a gourI or 2.

someone also recommended yellow labs which would work great imho but not sure how well they will treat everyone else, I guess yellows are not like your apex killers but yeah.

Just want this tank to be prefect very active and large amounts of healthy looking colored fish.

Alright fishlore! Heres the latest. I have taken videos as its easier heres a run down on what has changed, I won't go into stocks much.

sump for the 4x2x2 wall cracked, so I had to reseal that and level the sump and 2 stands which took time getting the right size metal cut out and cement tiles, when that was done started working on the oscar and synspilum tank which is done ( see video) I have also started closing down my 4ft split tier tank, selling that and replacing it for another 2 6x2x2. apart from this I have only done work on the 150G in my bedroom slowly coming along still a little more work and I got 8 more red devils don't ask.... was cheaper getting 8 then 4 more pairs, one of my favs so can't complain. Disney has also grown a bit and learned to take food out of my fingers but today he got a bit carried away and decided my finger is more tasty then the prawn so we had a bit of a tussle. Might add more bit brain dead!

Heres the videos.

Display tanks (3) Discus tank has gone awful needs lots of work other 2 almost done! the angel tank had just been stirred, normally its clean!

DoviI vs Vieja Fenestratus, they had just been moved so its very normally they will fight, all happy now and stick together, they do this to just check whos big dog, if this play ever lasts longer then 4 days or gets to a bad point I remove one fish, just figured some people may want to see it.

Your RD tank looks a bit full LOL. Also your female FH looks to have been beat up quite thoroughly. I'd put a mesh in between the two so she can grow back her pretty fins.

lol! Yeah, I have to sort the red devils out they are just in there till my 3 favs pair up then I will separate them, think the big one has found a girl but unsure, bit of tail hitting and they are fending off the other 7 rds.

She has been beaten up too much from being in the small 4ft, in the 2x2 she is going much better but he still chases her a bit, I really need to sit down and figure out how to get these guys to breed.

also need to get a 3tier 6x2x2 stand ikes that's gonna be fun to see how they build it lol.

of red devils? xD not much point, years ago some guys threw some american cichlids into a lake to see if they would live, the red devils and a few africans did, so everyone just goes a fishes for them only people who want pure ones buy then but there not many still a bit, my favorite fish so all is good!

I wouldn't mind breeding some more rare/fancy flowerhorns they sell for good down here but I can't get it going. I figured out they should be separated then introduce the male into her side when she lays but can't see how she would lay without him being there.

well, Daddy came home to a big surprise my kiddos have been busy today, 4 red devil pairs all with eggs its like ww3 in there any body leaves the nest the other nest is 15-30 cm away and they just fight and fight I am lucky the big boss and his misses laid away from everyone else his so strong he would just destroy everyone. I got one pair separated but the lights went out for some reason so I can't do anything else.

Also my jags seem to be getting ready to lay again very good day today !! only weird part is my jags last time laid 400+ eggs these red devils seem to have laid 50-100ish. Still very happy Dont think I can sell them all but still produce good feeders.

Hmmm where to start... Well Winter is slowly coming and its getting much colder here then last year + I have triple the tanks. The bill has jumped to high so I have decided to insulate the whole room. By doing it now I hope to save $$ early before the increases come for us plus when my next batch of tanks is finished there will be hardly any room!!!

So after reading a lot I went with 100MM thick EPS boards, they are water proof and super easy to work with. Then for the roof going for the same setup but using sarking > 100MM EPS > sliver bats. This gives a 5.5 R value for Australia which is pretty high, Not sure of the same in america but its high!

IMG-20120525-00134.jpg

heres stage 2 -3 one side has the board up other has the sliver bats, the sarking is above this.

IMG-20120525-00135.jpg

2 Beams finished! nice and shiny hehe

IMG-20120525-00140.jpg

The heater/cooler, nice and cheap to run and does the best job.

IMG-20120525-00141.jpg

The best idea so far. Tap right in the room, the A/C installer also found a drain right outside the room very happy with this going to make life much easier.

I can't tell if my little area done is working or if the heater will work well. The roller door had to go for the new one to come which is not expected for 1 month, but the guys who did the tap and ac agreed to help me take it off for free and seeing as it hardly shut I said why not after 1 bolt it fell down was hardly in the wall. Only issue is now I have a massive hole in the wall thinking of using some type of heavy duty plastic sheeting for the time to keep as much heat in as I can, Not running the heater but the tanks are still heating.

IMG-20120525-00142.jpg

On the fish side of things, got a lovely GT Pair heres a quick snap of the male.

Are you heating the whole room then, rather than individual tanks? My tanks are regulated by room temp, and we have the air set at 78. Makes life easier lol

  • #66
Hey Akari.

That's the plan , it should also lower the evaporation rate and time the heaters run. glass being a poor insulator the heaters are trying to heat the air also due to the constant cool air > hot water change, Once I cut that out I should be fine heating wise *cross fingers*

Just not sure what to do with the brick walls fitting EPS boards behind tanks is not high on my list ;(

water is cheap lol about 100 per quarter and we have a pool that is on auto top up (out door) electricity on the other hand well beep beep beep beep

finished the roof today, started the heater up 1 hour from 17c to 24c working like a treat once the roller doors are finished I think the room will be great. finish my tank setups and and and ITS TIME TO START THE STOCKING PROPERLY!!! I can't wait ! almost 1 year I did pretty good, only a few fish here and there

WELL! 24 tanks and I hardly stocked them! like If I did not feel so bad for all those Red devils bashed into a 4x18x14 tank I would have 8 fish that's not even half of 24 so I did a great job and saved some fishes life now they breed non stop for me

hey all.

Little update finished the insulation today, my uncles theory worked and the walls are fine as brick. I sealed the roller doors air tight so the only leak hole is under the door but that's an easy fix

On a fishy note, I "turned to the dark side" as some call it got my first Saltwater fish tank. Started because I saw a long finned bat face fish in the pet shop so somehow I went from that to getting a full Saltwater tank the next day, the guy explained everything to me and I managed to set it all up without killing any fish so I must be off to a good start everything is running great getting your ahead around all the different chemicals is hard and still ticking in but I will get there. I also got zapped 3 times by the powerhead plug , my hand still feels a bit funkey lol.

This is the new feature when you walk in to the room + the oscars.

Some of the fish

All in one S/W filter, has skimmer, canister and airpump + a power head thing. I find it pretty neat and cool. apparently I won't get far with corals with this system but its great for starting up I believe keeps it a lot more simple and later on once I have a full understanding I can move into a larger tank.

oh I know this is a fish forum but! I also added 2 new little soon to be semI monster and monster guys to the room. I am planning on doing a turtle-lizard-fish setup but started with a snake well 2.....

Second Biggest snake in aus Not so nice and calm yet still a baby where as the other one is a year old.

She'll be right mate! You ain't dead yet!

I am curious about the shocks though? Have you identified what caused them?

The only shock I've ever had in my Saltwater tank is from the sting of something (maybe majano or aiptasia), which numbed my fingers for about a week.

Great setup!

Thanks Ryan! Also thank you for all those pages you took the time out to write up. they where super helpful so thank you once again great articles!

The shock came from the power head, holding the cord and pushing it into the slot. I feel fine!

Just noticed your also in Melbourne

Haha I've been moving . It took longer than I expected to pack up my life in boxes haha. That's what I call it ;D. You will be surprised how much junk you can collect in one year!

Well.... you aren't dead yet so I'm sure you are okay. Usually shocks will only harm you badly if they are really strong. I had to go to the hospital when I touched a Swamp Cooler and the shock was so strong that I wasn't able to pull my hand away.

fun fun fun! Tell me about it, as you can see from page one there was a lot of life and junk to go threw before I could start haha.

Ouch! Its my first time. really weird feeling like its not like a hammer hit or cutting yourself hard to explain. Should be fine but if I sell all my fish tanks you guys know something is wrong with me ok?
