That is a huge garter snake, the ones around here are super small.

I was weeding a bed and sending baby crickets running all over. This toad came out and sat there in the dirt watching me for like 30 minutes until I finally got done and put fresh water into the birdbath. He was still there so I decided to give him a nice refreshing bath and put him in.

Don't worry, I took him out and put him back where he was. He was the most laidback cool dude I'd met. He let me pet him, just sat there in the water looking at me patiently.

Cute gecko!

I've seen a total of six snakes so far. The first one was the big black rat I captured here, then that large garter snake. Shortly after that, I saw a small garter snake. Yesterday and today, I've seen three baby black rat snakes. I suspect the large black rat I caught was the mother...

And there's this strange green thing on the side door's glass. Some type of spore...

Woah that is insane! It looks like an egg cluster...

And since they're right there, you can watch 'em grow. Maybe see what comes out.

Snails.

Is that what this thing is? It's been on the glass for about a week. Someone said it was Exporatis Phlaxis but I tried looking that up and that search result doesn't exist.

Edit: After a bit of research, I believe the small three snakes I saw were not baby black rat snakes but Worm Snakes. The thing that threw me off when I saw them were their pink bellies and solid black backs.

Went out to my workshop and found this guy on the floor today.
After a few pics put him outside.
He took off about an hour later.

Spring is here and the reptiles are waking up

I found these two guys outside of my dads office,

marsh snake.JPG

waterdragon.jpg

The first little fellow is a marsh snake, It's pretty young, and it'd easily fit into the palm of my hand. The second is an eastern water dragon, who's a few years old. Unfortunately the ravens turned up with a very similar looking dragon yesterday, and I haven't seen him around since, so they may have eaten him. It has been cold the past few days though so you can only hope. Speaking of the ravens, they have been praying on the local minor bird population, which has been a godsend, and they've figured out a way to peel back the gutter guard on the garage roof and store their meat underneath, I presume that they dry it in the sun or some such, because they seem to be building a nice larder in there and the magpies have yet to figure out a way to get to it. I haven't got any good photo's but it's pretty interesting to watch.

Ahg, the other countries always have cooler animals! What a cute little dragon. Like the sphinx moth too.

Actually I had something on my own fly screen window that looked just like that, but it was on the inside, and one day I awoke to find hundreds of teeny tiny praying mantis in my room, no idea how the mother got in! Perhaps there was a hole I couldn't find, or perhaps I didn't shut the glass properly one day. The adults were quite large, about 20cm from head to tip, and the females could fly a little. Some were dark brown and others a bright lime green, have you seen any insects like that around your house? They're good bugs to have around at any rate.

That doesn't look right for mantids. They completely enclose their eggs in an ootheca. ...I want another praying mantis now.

Nope. I wasn't there when they hatched. All of them are gone now except for one that was apparently unfertilized. It was interesting, because right before they hatched, I noticed black dots in each cell then within two days, they were all gone. It's still there, just clear. I'll post a pic of it once it's daylight outside.

I haven't known a mantis to make a circular ootheca. The ones I have seen have always been elongated ovals, like in that picture.

Just got in from a six-hour mowing spree;D

Wolf Spider with egg sack

Devil's horse grasshopper, around four inches long

068.jpg
Giant mushroom, larger than my hand

Eric the Red. He seemed rather upset when I mowed near his pen, but recovered when I tossed him some freshly-cut grass

As I fed Eric, I looked to my right... and my eyes widened in shock.

You should start a thread and tell all about your find and document your progress what did your mum say when you bought it home?

This has to be one of the creepiest spiders I have found. The thing is huge and covered in baby spiders. NOT CUTE

I'm going with Lynx spider of sorts not sure which species.

"Oh God!" She could not contain her shock, that I had found a tank older than me in our own backyard. Hopefully it was well-built.

With that lid, are you sure it isn't a terrarium?

That is one scary spider.

I don't fear them, but I keep my distance. What I hate most is when I walk into a spider web.

It had an ancient filter and air stone in it. And that was the bottom.

Did you test to see if they still worked?

Tigress Hill
  • #156
I think the filter bit the dust a long time ago, but the air stone isn't half bad. Still have to check if the tank leaks.

Awesome. I just hope you don't start a fire and burn down your house.

Hm. Perhaps you should include lighter fluid...
