I know a ball valve is installed on the output side of a canister filter but I can't find any information on exactly where along the tube to put the ball valve. For example, you could put it close to where the water is leaving the filter, or you could put it in the middle, or you could put it right before the water enters the spray bar. I don't want to cut the tube and find out I did it in the wrong place, then have to go out and buy more tubing. If you have any information please let me know, it will be greatly appreciated.

I finally got a hold of the manager at my local aquarium store. He said it doesn't matter where you place the ball valve as long as it's not on the intake side.

Agreed with your manager. I will say, having the valve closer to the filter will allow easy of cleaning - simply detach the hose, and the vavle will stop the water flow...
