The center of the shell of my blue mystery shell broke and now there's a tiny hole. Is there any effects of having it broken?how can I help fix it? Shes active and also burrows in the sand sometimes. Thanks

Welcome to the forum and glad you joined us. Is you water hard or soft. If it is soft than try putting a piece of cuttlebone in the tank or filter just to boost the calcium in the water. Alison

What do you feed her currently?

I have a small piece of cuttlebone in the tank and I also crushed a piece of cuttlebone in when I saw the hole on her shell

I'm using my phone so I don't know how to post pictures but the hole is in the center where the shell starts. And I feed her tropical granules and ive seen a huge change since I started feeding her that about 2 weeks ago. Her shell grew halfway around. I was shocked that she grew so quick in less than 2 weeks since I started feeding her that and she loves it

Here I tried to use tinypic idk if it will show but the first one shows the hole and her growth. Just noticed shew grew some more. The second is her size comparison to a dime.

Her shell does not look healthy. Mystery snails should have smooth, thick shells. I recommend added more sources of calcium. Perhaps more cuttlebone, or even crushed coral?

Ooh her shell is quite pitted. Looks like she was kept in pretty bad conditions before you got her. That new growth looks good though. You might try making her some snail jello with extra calcium also. I just made my first batch the other day.

Also, what are your GH/KH?

I have done some research.

In my opinion, it kind of looks like your snail is heading in the direction of shell detoriation. I got my information off of applesnail.net.

What do the rest of you think of this?

I'm definitely no snail expert but to me it looks like it had been in less than ideal conditions and when they got it, the change in conditions and food caused some new healthy shell growth. You can see the new grow out.

Agree with all of the above. My only question is whether or not your snail is in fact a mystery snail! For her size she seems to have too many spirals for one thing. Can you get a picture of the opening of her shell?

I thought the same thing about the overall size, but my only other thought would be a ramshorn and it doesn't quite look like that to me. What were you thinking?

Ramshorn! They do come in blue

My eyes must be playing tricks on me then because the point looks to be poking out rather than in. I have several ramshorns and they grow wider on both sides of the spiral evenly.

I agree, but it's hard to tell from the pictures because they look almost like optical illusions! I can't really tell the depth of the snail or its overall shape.

OP, is that a dime next to the snail? If it is a ramshorn, in my experience they have thinner shells than mysteries and are more prone to shell problems, or at least they happen more quickly. The better diet has definitely helped as it also helped my red ramshorn colony

Do please post some more pictures from different angles though!

It's a ramshorn, I their shells are more fragile but it looks like it's doing better now that it has ever been! Keep up the clean water and it'll be fine!
