Very nice! Hey I really like your plant with the purple spots on the leaves. Where did you get it?

Keeping on the water changes until the tank "matures" is the best way to keep the fishies alive. Cycling is the start, maturation is the goal.

Got the plant at Petco, I believe. Most of the plants came from there-silk.

Absolutely, a mature tank is the ultimate goal, where everything is in balance with each other

Thanks, you bet I will! Really want to keep them alive and healthy (plus prove to hubby that I was right to cycle the tank before adding fish!)

I keep seeing these people who make posts like "when can I stop doing water changes?" The answer is "never." It is like getting guinea pigs and asking when can you stop cleaning their cage, or more to the point, can I lock one in a plastic box and blow smoke in his face?
Water is "air" to a fish. "Dirty water is like dirty air" is a simple way to look at it.

I mean the people here in L.A. deal with the dirty air all the time

Were totally okay I swear

You should try the air here you have to chew it up before you can breath it.

There are ways to have a "no maintenance" tank, but they require a lot of foresight in the setup, and a very high plant to fish ratio. But there are aquariums which haven't had water changes in decades out there, going strong

I agree with the no-low maintenance and also the aquariums which haven't had water changes in decades. Sure. I did not change my tank water for 6 months at one time and cleaned my filter once a year. But I am also a person who knew the tank was very mature. It had been running for about 4 years at that point without any spikes in any parameter. I still never have any spikes, but I decided to start doing water changes. It's better for the fish.

I also have 11 glass catfish which never die and everyone says they are fragile fish. That doesn't mean I didn't accidentally kill my 2 of my 4 new blood parrots because I forgot that it takes several years to get a tank going.

No offense meant toward anyone and certainly not trying to start a debate, BUT...
I stand by my signature line.

Yeah, I've seen some pictures from there on some bad days. I thought it was a thick fog, but my friend told me it was pollution.

I am 99% sure that I could never get there But I have seen others do it. I believe they are magicians. For us non-magic mortals, keeping up with water changes and other maintenance is for the best. It's also relaxing, and why else have fish if not to mess around with them?

My friend from India told me he felt right at home in Seattle when we were ringed with wild fires and ash was falling from the sky... I can't even imagine living with that on a daily basis. There was a day there though, when our smog was worse than Beijing!...but only because they'd had a nice wind that day >_>

I'm sure you'll keep everything going for a long time yet to come! Just keep up with the water changes, don't overfeed, and enjoy!

It helps to just be able to talk to other people who enjoy fish-keeping! I try to get my family involved, my daughter likes the nursery tank & that's about it lol. & my spouse, he just can't get passionate about it the way that I am. A forum as amazing as this, with all these like-minded aquarium hobbyists & enthusiasts from all over the world is just Awesome.

I agree. I have learned SO much. Though unlike StarGirl I haven't been here a few years! I have a few years more of this forum to catch up to some of you folks! Though in experience you guys are really wise and I'd never catch up!

I learn stuff every day as well.

I'm fortunate that my daughter-in-law also keeps fish and shrimp, and lives next door, so I can talk to her about them and bounce ideas off her. Other than that, my wife likes my koi angel and named it Pinto, but she couldn't care less about the other fish or shrimp. That's okay though. We don't have to have the same interests.

I am fortunate to have a hubby that, although not into the hobby himself, gets concerned about my fish even though he knows little about them. He puts up with all the times I see the fish do something interesting to me and I have to tell him about what is going on. He never questions what I buy for them. His only response is, if you need it get it and maybe you should get two so you can have a backup.

When just recently my elderly pearl danio jumped out of the tank he worked with it for at least an hour trying to revive it. Sadly it was too far gone and a few days later we had to put it down. After this happened he built me some net type covers for the tank so it couldn't happen again.

I too, love this forum. I love talking fish. It gives me great joy to help someone and even more shared joy when I read that a cycle someone has struggled with is finally done. I do the happy dance with them when they finally see that beautiful sky blue in their nitrite testing tube after so many days of seeing purple.

All in all this forum, in my case, gives me as much as it gets from me. I've been here a few years and hope to be here many more. So many folks I've helped soon leave never to be heard from again and I miss them. I do realize some folks do have a life outside Fishlore though

Some do stay and share the knowledge they have gained during their time here and as long as some stay and share, Fislore will continue to thrive.

The whole post is accurately said. I agree, I love this forum, I love talking, watching, and being around fish. There have been threads where the hobbyist doesn't know the cause of a problem in their tank, and I come to their rescue and help out. I feel overjoyed when I help someone in need on this forum. I am also grateful when others come to my rescue. I also strongly agree when some people leave fishlore to never to be seen again, I am sad, but Yes, people do have a life out of fishlore too. Many people's family is supportive of their hobby, and when I look at it, my family is also supportive. Your hubby is quite supportive, which is always nice, to have someone have your back.
