Tfreema’s Fish Tanks

I don’t think I have the energy to tear that tank completely apart to catch the loaches. I should probably just stick with my original plan of waiting for the loaches to age out before getting bichirs.

What are your thoughts about the Senegal?
They are a little more docile, but they also don't get as big as the delhezI bichirs, normally they top out around 7-8 inches, rarely up to 9". the dels i've seen some that are 12-14" and about 2 inches in diameter.

Great information! Thanks so much.

Maybe I just go for the Senegal. There is someone else wanting to trade a regular color one.

Oh man, this fish shuffling is hard! Over the weekend, I got the adolfoi cories to the 75g, 8 peppered cories (there should have been 9) to the 125g, 9 peacock gudgeons to the 40b, 19 peacock gudgeon juvies to the 20L.

The hardest to catch were the gudgeons and cories in the 26g bowfront. I had to dig out all the plants and take all the decor out. Still couldn’t find one of the gudgeons in addition to the missing cory but turns out it was in the sponge filter pipe in the bucket, lol.

I am very excited about getting the gymnogeos!! But not excited about catching the neon tetras out of the 125g, lol. At least I have about a month while the gymnogeophagus terrapurpura are in quarantine. They are shipping out tomorrow overnight delivery.

So, as I was finally able to separate out Jiminy and Cricket yesterday, I noticed Jiminy hiding behind the pleco cave. I pulled Cricket and went about my business of setting up my new FX4 on that tank and cleaning another canister filter (because I cannot just have a day off, lol) and noticed he was still in the same spot. I got a 10 gallon tank ready with salt to add him. Sadly, he only lasted another hour and was gone. :-(

He was perfectly fine the night before and Monday was eating the red wriggler worms with gusto. He looked pretty beat up. It was either Polly the blood parrot or Cricket decided she wanted a divorce. Poor Jiminy. He was such a big beautiful boy.

I put Cricket back into the tank before Polly could get used to not having one of them in there. Here is my dilemma. If it was Cricket that killed him, I know she can hold her own with Polly and needs to stay especially since the other tank has angelfish and adolfoi corydoras. BUT, if it was Polly, then Cricket is in danger. I am not sure which way to turn. The woes of keeping cichlids are real.

So sorry to hear .

I've gone thru that with a few of my full grown EBAs. I have 3 left and they kept spawning in the 75 gallon so I grabbed a few. Turns out it was about 30-40 and they're growing out in a breeder box now.

What a shame.
The trials of keeping "Wet Pets". It is difficult to know exactly what happened. It took me awhile to figure out my pair of EBA, at times will fight. Especially just after a spawn hatches. The last time they must of had a a doozie, her lip was torn some. All healed up. So, now they are kept in separate tanks, until I want a spawn.
I have 4, pretty sure males about 3+ inches around 9 months now if interested.

Thanks! These guys never successfully spawned for me, even when I put them in the 40b for a few months. Got wiggler a few times, tried to pull them a couple times but they never survived. He stayed frustrated trying to breed with her and tearing up all my plants while she seemed pretty much uninterested.

Cichlids are unpredictable. I actually had been wanting to separate them for some time, but kept putting it off with being so busy. I finally had it scheduled to separate the day he died. Talk about crazy timing. I was one day too late.

What a shame.

Thanks so much. I actually know of several folks locally that keep and breed them. I had picked up one for another 75 gallon tank that is now almost full grown. Although I am pretty sure she is a female. I will only keep single EBA's in a tank from this point forward. I have no interest in breeding them, but love how pretty they are.

I am wondering if keeping multiple of the same sex after maturity is possible without aggression?

I plan to make a post like this today at some point now....

If I am reading this correctly, sorry for your loss. I know some do not understand, but we really get attached and love our wet pets. Especially those standout favorites. Even though he hated and tore up my plants, I was really attached to this one.

oh no, sorry to confuse. I Haden’s read through the whole post, only the first bits. I meant I would post about all my tanks at some point today. Sorry for your loss though I have lost some fish to and it is always really sad and I don’t get why some people don’t understand why it’s so upsetting. You know someone losses a dog and everyone feels bad for them but someone losses a fish and there like ok, so what? But I think the people here on fishlore understand, fish are so personable and you really get to know them. Again sorry for your loss (and the confusion).

I had 8 EBA together for the last 9 months they are from the last spawn, never really any issues until a pair forms. Then I separate and sell.
coralbandit may have more info he's been raising them for awhile. In fact I got my original pair from him.

We are not blaming the BP anymore ?
I have 3 females out of 7 original EBA left .Probably 5+ years old .
The males may have wiped themselves out or just died younger ? Never really new who was who but seems clear I have 3 females now !
The females are old much larger then my largest juvies that are almost a year old [soon to go to Mcassella]..
Maybe the females are killers .That would be a shocker !

Still not positive if it was the BP or the female. I am monitoring closely and so far just see Polly chasing the female EBA a little with no real contact. I have had others tell me that their females were aggressive with the males during breeding. He was relentless with her and stayed frustrated because she just didn’t want to breed or something. They have always been somewhat dysfunctional. Only got wigglers a few times.

Thank you. Some are harder to lose. These guys have been the show pieces in the tank, along with Polly of course.

Thank you! They are stunners that’s for sure. They come from good stock.

I will need to get a recent picture of buttercup. She is much more dainty and much lighter yellow. She is in with Mable, the chocolate with red fins female and a sneaky juvie red marble that evaded capture when I was clearing them out. I am hoping it’s a female so I can keep it in there. The females are so small, I think 3 in the 75 gallon would be a good number.

Guys, this is a DWARF lily. I have had it for a long time. Kept it in a 20L as a for-ground to mid-ground plant. It stayed small. Yet when I moved it to this 75 gallon it just kept getting bigger and bigger. I had it in the front but had to move it back. Geez Louise!

Fluval planted 3.0 versus Aquaneat full spectrum in 20L.

I have a Fluval 2.0 and 2 shop lights (6500k, 2200 lumens ea) on my 75 gallon and I can't grow plants other than vals. I put my miserable swords from the 75 gallon in my 20 gallon long with an Aquaneat light and it blossoms to 14"+ within 2 months.

Isn’t it funny that you have the opposite issue?

It is also odd that a plant will do well in one section of the tank, but then perish in another.

Part of the problem is that the EBA are tearing up the substrate and the val's are loving what's going on and migrated from the right to the left of the tank. I trimmed and plucked them but they grow pretty fast and block the lights from reaching the bottom so the swords, crypts and crinum are not doing too well.

I had 2 of the low sword types in a container on a shelf for a few months. They had a few small leaves on each that were less than 2" and they just wouldn't die. I decided to plant them in the 20L and within a month, they have 10-20 5"+ leaves and are flourishing.

Your 75 gallon looks amazing! I have red tiger lotus (not the dwarf variety) in my 90g, and they grow about the same as your dwarf lily. The leaves will keep climbing higher until they try to surface, at that point I pinch off the whole leaf because I don't want them blocking light and also I like the look of the leaves underwater. Eventually the taller leaves start to need pruning, leaving more light for the new leaves and they open lower again. So my plants are moving up and down slightly within the middle section (top to bottom) of my 90g. I have three large plants in the background and one very short lotus in the foreground. It stays lower and spreads more outward because it gets so much light.

I have definitely noticed as well how certain plants grow differently in different tanks. When one plant starts up do poorly, I'll often move it to another tank until it does well.

Nice beautiful sunny day. Most would think, let’s go for a hike, walk, enjoy a park, etc. Not me. I think, I gotta knock out some canister filter cleanings while it’s nice outside, lol.

(I clean mine outside by the water hose with tubs and buckets of dechlorinated water.)

Ok, I need your advice PLEASE!!

I have been offered a 75 gallon SALTWATER tank absolutely free. I do not yet have all the details and will come back and update when I do. I do not have room so would need to consider replacing one of my 75 gallon freshwater tanks. I have been wanting to jump into the salty world for some time now.

The question I have is, do you see any room for consolidating any of the 75 gallon participants into other tanks in the following listing (it's a lot!):

I won't list my 125g because I know none will fit in with that stock and temperature. And keep in mind, I do not want to mix male and female bn plecos (no breeding). Some re-homing can be considered. I will put a star beside those that have to stay.

120g
5 ropefish*
2 ctenopoma (african leaf fish)*
1 african brown knife*
2 bengal loaches*
2 bn plecos*

75g - AC 110 and Hydor 350
1 large angelfish*
11 congo tetras
9 adolfoi corydoras
2 female bn plecos

75g - 1 FX4 (plans to add another smaller canister filter)
1 large angelfish*
1 electric blue acara*
1 rainbow shark*
12 congo tetras
1 large male bn pleco*

75g - 1 FX4 and 1 Hydor 350
1 blood parrot*
1 electric blue acara*
4 hoplo catfish*
5 praecox rainbows
3 small female bn plecos

Wow! That's a good deal!! And youd sure be diving in head first!! If I ever dive into saltwater...itll be with a small tank. Lol

Any chance youd be willing to do a dual stand for two of the 75s? Haha

Haha!! I already have a 3 step ladder similar to this one to get in my 120g. A 75 gallon double stack would be even taller I think. I am barely 5' tall so it's a challenge.

But anywhoo, crisis averted since as the wife was talking to me, the husband gave the tank away to someone else. So, back to my plan to continue downsizing my freshwater tanks until I feel I have extra time to devote to a saltwater tank. The stress levels of keeping up with everything right now are just too much so it is for the best that I don't jump into it before I get a handle on what I already have.

I have 3 racks with tank tops over 6' (I'm 6') so the step ladder helps a lot. It's also great for w/c on lower tanks where I fill with a 5 gallon and just siphon the water into the tanks rather than use a pump if I'm only doing 1 of my bottom tanks.

*Edit*
I have a Gorilla step ladder from HD. Very strong and sturdy. Highly recommend these for fish rooms

So, I am freaking out a little about this stuff. I noticed my plants are not doing as well and this stuff growing on the sponge filter.

IMG_8127.JPG

So, after weeks of cleaning it and it coming back every week, I switched out the little sponge filter for a larger one (using one sponge from an established tank and one new one) Sunday. Today is Tuesday and I am already seeing it on the new sponge filter.

IMG_8130.JPG

IMG_8131.JPG

I had switched out the light recently and I think the new one is a marine light. I have dosed with excel and turned the light off. I will switch it back out after blackout period this week.

Parameters are 0, 0, ~30 before the water change.
