Traded in 30 more angels tonight. That leaves me with about 40.
I have picked out another black lace to keep.

Update on numbers in each tank:
45g - 14
30g - 13
26g - 9
20g - 6

I may move 3 larger ones from the 30 to 45.

Update on Smokey.
His color is back to normal and looking good. He is eating with gusto again, even flakes. He interacts with me when I walk up to the tank. I am so relieved to be past whatever the episode was. The cories are doing good too.
I hate that I lost Lacie, Blackie, and Goldie over it. I am excited that I have Tilly from Lacie and Blackie's spawn.
Now I just need to decide when it is best to introduce Tilly to Smokey? I am keeping a 2nd black lace in case Tilly is a boy too. I'll just call them Tilly1 and Tilly2, lol. Once I determine the sex, I will have to rehome one.
I also have the two koi angels from bizaliz3 in the mix. I am not sure how many I want to keep at this point.

bizaliz3, How big do you think Tilly should be before I introduce her (I am hoping her) to smokey? I am thinking about moving smokey into the 45 with her and then put most of the 44 babies left in the 55 to grow out including the Inky and Blinky.
Anyone else that would like to chime in is welcome!

What's the size difference?

Angels are so dang unpredictable. It'll really just have to be trial and error. Introduce them early in the day when you will be home to monitor for a while. It shouldn't take long to know if it's going to work or not.

She is a little bigger than quarter size and he is pretty much full grown. I guess I am being impatient.
I wonder if I should just put him in the 45g and the babies in the 55 gallon now that I got it back to healthy.

I have been giving the babies some time to grow. Next weekend will be another trade-in time of as many as are big enough.

Here are some short videos of the three tanks the remaining 44 babies are in.

45g with Tilly, Inky, and Blinky.

26g bow front with Tilly2.

30g High (extra tank that my niece is taking with one of the angelfish).

So, I am anxious to get this batch cleared out so I can get my number of tanks back down to 8 or 9. The one in limbo is the 26g bow front. Once the babies are gone, it will be empty. I can take it down or find some stocking for it. I am leaning towards taking it down even though I am very happy with the scaping. I would move the snails, plants and wood to another tank, likely the 45 in video above as it needs a complete re-scape.
My thoughts are to use the 26g at a later date to dip my toe in salt water. I am really wanting some sea horses. A whole bunch of the cute little dwarf species would be awesome. Lots of research and getting the right equipment would be in order first.
The strange thing about the 45g is that all the nerite snails have disappeared. They are good hiders, but I have not seen any of them for over a week now. No shells or nothing. This tank is a little overrun with ramshorn snails so I wonder if they were outcompeted. If so, I should at least see the shells right? It's a mystery. I may start picking out the ramshorn. The ghost shrimp have curved the population of them and the bladder snails considerably.

Beautiful babies I really miss having longfin babies in my house! Black mamba was my one longfin female.... and I lost her. Believe it or not losing her was almost harder than losing Charming!! I have one long fin baby from her who is almost an adult now..... I know I keep saying I'm done breeding.... but if that one pairs up with somebody I will probably raise their babies. When I look at yours I just long for those long fins again LOL!!!

I think it would be really fun to use your 26 for some seahorses! I've always wanted seahorses too if I ever decide to dabble in saltwater that would be the direction I would go! if you give it a try and succeed I might have to follow your lead

I am excited to see how Tilly and Tilly 2 will turn out fin wise. I hope at least one is a comb tail veil. I still have not decided what combination I will keep. I will hang on to more than I plan to keep until I learn their personality and how they all get along. I just hope Smokie is compatible with at least one. Inky and Blinky will be keepers at least for the short term.
I will definitely start a thread if I decide to go the seahorse route. That will be at least fall time. I want to get my 120 scaped with live plants first.

I traded 23 more babies today. Got a couple pieces of awesome wood, rocks, a betta for my sweet aunt, and a dozen ghost shrimp so I am pleased with the deal, especially since 5 of those was owed for the celestial pearl danios I got a couple weeks ago.

The angelfish tank got a rescape with some really tall crypts. This is where Smokie and Tilly will be kept once all the babies are cleared out. I am not sure about how unruly they are, lol. What do you think Soocold? Do you think I could safely trim some shorter?
You can compare to the video above for difference. (That's a carrot for my pleco on a fork by the little log in case you are wondering)

Love the crypts!

When I trimmed them too short the stem melted. I would try on one leaf and give it a week and see what happens

They are different so I am having to get used to them, but they are growing on me, especially as I see the angelfish swimming in and out of them.

I think I will wait and see. It won't be long until I move them to the 120 where they will fill it out much better. I need to find some tall leafy plants too.

Love the crypts too! I wouldn't trim them - crypts don't do well with trimming, it seems

I have sent a 30 gallon tank and setup home with my niece. She will be back for an angelfish or two once she gets it all set up. She has not decided if she wants to try two angelfish or just get a school of tetras to go with it. She will also have ghost shrimp and a nerite snail I am giving her.
That leaves me with 15 babies in the 45g and 8 in the 26g.
I am back into the single digits at 9 for tanks up and running!! Woot woot!!
Once I have all the baby angelfish moved out, I am considering moving my cooler temp 20 gallon fish to either the 55 or 45. It has peppered cories and von rio tetras. I could beef up or add another schooling fish. Definitely would beef up the shoal of cories. That would get me down to 8 tanks. (And quite a few backup for QT.)
I am keeping Smokie and Tilly in either the 45 or 55. I am not sure which one. If I choose the 55, I have the divider to use if things get ugly between them or to prevent breeding.
It will be a while before the smallest babies are big enough so I have time to mull this over. My other idea is to turn the 55 gallon into a cichlid tank with a parrot and two EBAs. That would keep me at 9 tanks though. . I did buy the 45g high specifically for angelfish so I am leaning towards that one for Smokie and Tilly.
Any thoughts or ideas would be welcomed!

You know my vote will be for a cichlid tank and ebas and a parrot so ya LOL. Joking aside, I think you should do what you'll regret most not doing...This hobby may not be a forever thing for all of us so I'd rather spend my time checking off bucket list things while I'm still in it and able.

I was looking at it differently in thinking I could always do a cichlid tank later, lol. I figure I am a lifer in this hobby.
It has gotten to where I am not enjoying it like I should with so many tanks. Too much time spent on cleaning and maintenance leaving too little time to enjoy them.
We just looked at a house that has a basement with a kitchenette. I could have all my tanks in one area with no floor support issues!! That would cut down on time considerably to have all tanks in one area instead of going from one end of the house to another. I could transition all my smaller tanks into larger! It is relatively no more time to clean and change water on a large versus a small tank.

  • #337
Lol! I would like to think I'm a lifer but when I start a family, I have a feeling I'll be too busy caring for fry of the human kind to devote as much time as I do now to the aquatic kind . If I HAD to, I could pare it down to two tanks; I'd keep my cichlid tank and combine my shrimp tank with my betta tank and hope my betta doesn't have a huge appetite for RCS lol.

I understand the hours spent on maintenance kind of robbing you of the time you could spend enjoying your tanks though. I feel the same way! Getting everything in one area will definitely help you though. I'm just starting to look at houses myself and a basement with a kitchenette is on the wishlist for me too so I hope you find something that works!

I've been planning for a 200+ main display, and a pair of smaller fry tanks. I know I'll never have the patience for more, I sometimes struggle with my 56 & 55 gallon

We made an offer on the house! I am on pins and needles waiting 2 days for the deadline for them to respond.
I never thought that how it accommodates fish tanks would be a factor in choosing a home, lol.

The house deal did not work out. The seller wants to hold out for someone that wants to pay more, but needs to sell their house first.
Oh well, not meant to be. We will keep looking.

I'm sorry it didn't work out. The next one you find is going to be even better though; everything happens for a reason. Hang in there!!

That, or wait until the dream home you didn't know existed comes along. We looked for 5 years. Several attempts that fell through, some I was quite bummed over. When my house now hit the market, I waited 4 months before we moved on it (I thought it had already gone under contract). I'm so glad none of those others worked out. I couldn't dream of a better house for us!
The hardest part is being patient!

Sooooo, we put an offer on another house that was accepted this morning!!
No basement, but much more room with a living room, den, formal dining room, and breakfast nook. There is a laundry room as well as washer dryer hookups in a pantry in the kitchen. Plenty of space to put in a utility sink for Python hookup and bathing dogs.
I am dreading moving the big 120 though.

I am so excited I cannot contain myself. We thought they would counter offer because we offered $25k below asking price. They accepted right off!!!! We have not received the signed contract yet, so I will feel much better once it is completely official.

Yay! New house!

I wish I could do that, lol. That big 120 is very heavy empty. The fish in it are rather large with spikes and barbels that can do a number on your hands if not careful about handling the net while transferring to bag or bucket. I have not decided how I will transport them yet.

Congrats!!!! I wish you much luck with the move! Looking forward to see all your current tanks in the new house, maybe even some new big tanks too lol

Haha! No more tanks any time soon. I just finally got down into single digits. If I can fit a bigger tank somewhere, it would replace one or two smaller current tanks, that's for sure. For now I will just concentrate on getting what I have moved.

We set the closing date 8/4. AND the most exciting part is my daughter and son-in-law have decided to move back home with my 6 month old granddaughter from being 12 hours away and take over our current house!!!!

Time to seriously get the last of the angelfish spawn cleared out now. I will post a new video since that's what this thread is supposed to be about, lol.

I wish I could say the same!!! I really want to be done! I know exactly how you feel!! But I've still got a ways to go before I can downsize! Ugh

CONGRATS ON THE NEW HOUSE!!!! I'm so happy for you!! And to have your daughter and granddaughter close to home!! That's just fantastic! yay!!!

Is there a fish room option in the new house?

Thank you!! It is very exciting for the house and so much more so to have my sweet granddaughter and kids close to home.

There is a den (in addition to a living room) that is a part of the master bedroom suite as well as a formal dining room on the same end of the house. I think those two rooms will contain my tanks. I have not decided where each will go yet. I am waiting for the home inspector to tell me how the subfloors look. I am specifically asking for them to tell me how the floor joists run, etc.

Closing date 8/4!!!!!

I have decided to keep 2 of blackie and lacies babies and one of the koi babies that bizaliz3 sent me.
Tilly looks just like Lacie, but doesn't seem as fragile. Blackie Jr looks just like his daddy. And I needed to replace my koi girl I lost this year. Smokie makes 4 that I will attempt to keep in a 55 gallon tank.
Blackie Jr - even has one black and one white ventral fin like daddy.

Tilly (definitely a comb tail veil)

Blinky - finally starting to show some yellow/orange
