Tfreema's Angelfish Breeding Attempt

Sorry to hear... any idea what caused all of this. Seems like since the hatching of the fry things have gone downhill quickly.

Could the stress of all the fry and all the movement of fish around have anything to do with the recent deaths of adults?

I am asking only... I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, quite the opposite actually... but don't you think we should shift efforts to find out what happen so as to prevent it from happening again?

I have no idea on how to go about this but maybe someone else would?

Again so very sorry...

Regards

I'm so sorry tfreema!!!!
You did everything you could! She would have died a long time ago if it weren't for all of your efforts. I'm so sorry you lost her!!!

SIP Goldie!

Thank you! I just pray that this is the end of it.

I am open to any and all ideas, suggestions, advice so please don't feel like you need to hold back.

I have been very perplexed and trying to figure out that very thing.

It was right after I rehomed the African cichlids out of the 55g, divided it and moved the two angelfish pairs in. They spawned simultaneously and were all doing great. I removed a large number of wigglers from one, the others ate their eggs. I left a small batch with mom and dad that died off within a week.
During that week, Goldie and Smokie got vicious so I removed him back to the 45g. Not long afterwards Goldie was hiding in the corner so I moved her to a 10 gallon QT. Then the remaining two fish started exhibiting the same symptoms and eventually died. The details were posted in this or my 55 gallon divided tank build thread.
The only new thing was some new wood and the divider.
Goldie recovered and was doing well. So I tried putting her and Smokie back in the 55 without a divider, removed the wood, started daily water changes, and artemiss. She regressed and Smokie started acting off.
This is a long way for me to say that I think it is something in this tank versus the shifting around. At this point I think a parasite. If things do not improve, I will need to euthanize the remaining fish, shrimp, and snails (I have some beautiful zebra nerites) and do a reset on this tank. And then pray no cross-contamination to other tanks has occurred.
I just ran bleach water though the Python followed by hot water for a while after water changes in the 55 and two QTs and draining the other 10 gallon and bleaching everything in it.

I know it's crazy because I am sure you took the appropriate precautions, but could the trip to the Quarantine Tank be the culprit? It's kind like us humans we are never sick when you visit someone at the hospital but how many time do we get sick a few days later? Just a thought and again I am sure you took all the precautions with the QT before you put new fish in it.

Yeah, the QT was actually a well established display tank until just recently when my frogs got upgraded to a 20g. No issues in that tank ever. Plus the last two that died were left in the 55g. No QT for them.

I'm sorry you lost Goldie, SIP.

Would the frogs have passed anything to them? (Though if Goldie remained in the QT, that wouldn't have been possible if I'm reading that right, correct?)

No. Goldie improved in the tank they used to be in that is now a QT.
I did have some new frogs that had the chytrid fungus, but that does not transfer to or use fish as a host. I managed to treat and save my original two and now know what to do when I get ready to buy new frogs to heal them. I am just too wrapped up in all this other stuff to go there yet.

I'm so sorry all of this has happened. I hope you figure it out soon, and I hope it certainly doesn't come down to you having to euthanize all of those fish.

Me too! Smokie looked at and swam away from bloodworms so I am just sick.
The cories are laying eggs all over the tank.
I am completely perplexed.

I am too! Well, this is the rainy season, so maybe all the rain is triggering them into thinking it's time to breed? (Well, it's the rainy season where I live, I'm not too sure about you. I'm just assuming because it's April.)

That have been getting almost daily water changes. I add back water a tad cooler than what is in the tank which simulates rain. You are right, that does inspire spawning.

Here are the babies in the 45. They are growing really quickly. I am out of town next weekend so two weeks from now I think I will have some good size for trade in. The largest black lace will be held back to keep one.

Yep, that'd do it!

And those juvenile angels are adorable! (Is juvenile right, or are they still technically babies?) I love how some of them are just minding their own business, while others a like, "What'ca doing? Who you looking at?" It's just so cute!

Juvenile is correct (So is babies in my book). They are all like little puppies wagging their tails, lol.

Beautiful babies! They all have such pretty fins.

I know, it is interesting to see what a variety of fin shape they have. I have chosen the black lace that I will keep.
I think I will either keep my angels singly or with the same sex so no more breeding. It's one of those things like, been there, done that, no need to do it again, lol. At least not for a good long while. I am ready to get back into the single digits with fish tanks. I think a good batch of them should be ready for the fish store in a couple weeks. Maybe even this weekend but I will be out of town so that gives another week to grow.

They are now eating the extra small new life spectrum and crushed up shrimp pellets. They went crazy for them. Still feeding bbs first, then crushed flakes, then just a tiny pinch of NLS, and crushed shrimp pellets.

Oh, and I am pretty sure Smokie ate some nls pellets, but he just swam past bloodworms.

I was out of town for a few days so no water changes occurred over the weekend. I was concerned about the 55 where Smokie is that I have been babying with frequent water changes. I am too exhausted today after a day of travel. Plans to hit it and the two QTs tomorrow.
Smokie looks great so I am praying we have turned the corner on whatever was going on in that tank. I am going to run another round of parasite meds this weekend on it and the two quarantine tanks to be sure. I may follow that up with another 10 day treatment of artemiss to build up immunity.

The babies are growing well. I don't know if I will have time to do trade ins this weekend as I will be making sure all tanks have adequate attention after skipping a week in water changes for any I do not get to the next couple days. This is why I stay under stocked and over filtrated. I cannot believe that I used to only do water changes once a month. That was the norm when I started in the hobby 30 years ago so when I picked it back up 7-8 years ago, that's what I did. Thank goodness for google and sites like this to help us learn to better care for our fishes.

Opened up another thread about my suspicious wood. Got a consensus that it is grape wood.

So I did a quick search and found bad reviews on the stuff when used in aquatic setups while others have had success. Reports of fish dying off, etc.

According to this info, it should only be used in dry setups, not recommended for aquatic use.
Big sigh.

I think I am going to look into getting some manzanita. That and spider wood seems to be the best for maintaining integrity.

The wood still smells bad after boiling twice and soaking since I removed it from the tank.

I have a nice piece of grape wood that hasn't murdered anyone, but it may just be where it was collected - if it was sprayed or even had certain fertilizers fed to it could cause harm in wet set ups.
I got in some nice spiderwood finally (aquabid for the win!).

Though I'm not sure if I believe that link completely, I have a tank that has had oak branches in it for months now without harm - and the cactus skeleton, that is what cholla wood is, so..??

The angel babies in the 45g are definitely growing faster than the others in smaller tanks. I have some that are a little bigger than nickel size in body and their fin span is huge!

I just wish I had time to make some trade-ins this weekend. I would like to clear some of those out to move more in for growing. After being out of town last weekend, I need to do tank maintenance as priority number one this weekend. I will make phone calls to arrange for next weekend.

Thank you! Up until I went out of town Saturday, I was feeding half and half crushed flakes and bbs morning and night, but I have not fired the hatchery back up yet. Now just flakes in the morning.

I have been introducing the tiny nls pellets and crushed shrimp pellets with the nightly feeding. They have also gotten some bloodworm treats the last couple weeks (weekly treat for all).

It is a big difference in the 45 vs the smaller tanks so it is really important to have larger growout tanks.

How old are they now? And how many in the 45?

I'm trying to figure out why my babies seem to always plateau and have almost stalled growth once they get approx dime size...

Yours are such good sizes....I was wondering if maybe you had added something to their diet!! Lol

Almost 3 months. About 35 in that tank. A lot of them are still dime size or smaller. It is just a handful that have surpassed nickel size.

BTW, I did not answer about how the koi babies are doing earlier. They are doing great! Both come to top for food and are very interactive. They are still in 10 gallon QT for another week or so.

bizaliz3 how much do you get for your angelfish? A new lfs is offering 75 cents cash or $1 credit for nickel to quarter size and .50 cash or .75 credit for dime size.

So, I bagged up 18 angelfish.
The five largest (over nickel, not quite quarter) went to one store, the rest between dime and nickel size went to another.
They were both happy to give me $1.50 credit each once they saw the fish.
The second store in Chattanooga said bring 25 next week and he will give $1.50 credit or $1 cash. He loved the looks of them and complimented what a good job I have done with this being my first batch.
I am so excited! That leaves me with the following numbers to rearrange:
45g - 18
30g - 28
26g - 14
20g - 12

I am thinking I should move the 10 largest ones out of the 30 gallon over to the 45g to get some good growth this next week.
What do y'all think?

BTW, I kept the large long fin black lace that is about quarter size. I will have it and the koi from bizaliz3 to raise and decide if I want to breed anymore later. I wonder if I can get any of those paired up with Smokie? At what point can I safely put them in the tank with him?
I am considering putting the keepers in the 55 gallon with Smokie using the divider after I run the final round of parasite meds next weekend. Should I hang on to more than 1 black lace?? So many decisions to make, but for now I have 12 tanks to clean and do water changes, lol.

I missed this mention yesterday.

For me I've been getting a dollar each in store credit. And I tend to get more for them if I use my store credit that very day and it becomes more of a trade situation...

So wonderful to hear your lfs was more than happy with your angels!! That has to feel really good!! Congratulations!!

I know, it made me think well this breeding and fry raising gig is not so bad after all, lol.
If I do wind up with another breeding pair, I will get a large growout tank so it is just one tank when they leave the 10g.

I think I will put one of your koi with a black lace in the 45g and the other with a couple black lace in the divided 55g. I am just worried I will wind up with the two black lace siblings pairing up before they are big enough to introduce to Smokie, lol. I am trying to figure out how to keep a few of them until I can sex them without them inter-breeding.

bizaliz3
  • #312
Well...even if they do interbreed, you don't have to raise those babies. And any kind of pairing will help you determine their genders. And as I've discovered, once you verify their genders, you put a male and a female together...give them no other options, and they will pair up it's pretty fun when you start to know everybody's gender and you can play matchmaker!

I am really pleased with Smokie's improved coloring and appetite. He does not eat like he should, but is picking at the nls and shrimp pellets.

The babies continue to grow well. I think I will get my comb tail veil in this one. She is at least quarter size. Much bigger than all the rest.

207f568ecb4f772efed5edc564a6b064.jpg

Here is a quick video of her and her tank mates.

I have one store taking 25 and another will take 10 if over nickel size (prefer quarter).

I agree! I just hope it's a she so I can try to pair up with Smokie one day. I will probably pick another one to keep for a while just in case. Of course, I have the two koi babies from you that may be the opposite sex. I will hang on to both of them for at least a while to see how it all shakes out.
