Tetra Safe Start With Api Stresscoat Plus

HI I am new here. Will API StressCoat plus mess up Tetra SafeStart plus? I decided today to try Tetra Safe Start Plus for the first time. I read in reviews that you shouldn’t use it within 24 hours of using Prime water conditioner. I thought no problem there, I don’t use Prime I have StressCoat plus. So tonight I cleaned out my filter some and added a little water and used apI stress coat plusenogh for about 5-10 gallons of water). A couple of hours later I added the tetra safe start. Now I’m reading that any water conditioner may ruin the TSS. Did I waste an $11 bottle of the tetra safe start?

HI welcome to FishLore!!

According the Tetra any product that detoxifies chloramine (which Stress Coat Plus does) will kill off the bacteria in Tetra SafeStart.
Q & A With Tetra about Tetra SafeStart

Here on the forum we always talk about Prime and Tetra SafeStart. I can see where the info about a product that detox's chloramine could get over looked.

Hate that you probably wasted the money.

There are fish in the tank?

Are you sure you’re not confusing products like API Stess Zyme with products like API Stress Coat? I see no potentially negative relationship between TSS and Stress Coat. Where are you reading that?

Interesting. I wasn’t aware. Can you post a link with that information?

I always forget that too. It was in an e-mail Q & A we did with Tetra

I guess you could monitor the tank for a few days to a week (depending on your stock) to see what happens. If it looks like TSS (Tetra SafeStart) is failing, do a water change, add the Stress coat wait 24 hours then re-dose with TSS.

Let's see if anyone else thinks this is a good option.

Super interesting. If I’m interpreting the information correctly, products like Stress Coat will kill the bacteria in TSS due to the way TSS is made, but will not kill the nitrifying bacteria in similar products or in general?

I don't think they are addressing other bacterial products.

No disrespect to those who use TSS, but I’ve started using a product that I believe is superior to products like TSS. It’s called Biohome Aquarium Filter Starter Balls. I started using them a little over a year ago and while I’ve had some unreliable success with bacterias-in-a-bottle, these time released bacteria balls are the first product I’ve used that reliably stabilized a cycle overnight. I throw a few into my media every month.

I’m sorry your efforts with TSS may have been wasted. How odd that the bottle doesn’t clearly state that it’s ingredients are incompatible with commonly used conditioners?

It's too bad the TSS bottle doesn't have any instructions at all. TSS is a great product, but only when used properly, so instructions would really be helpful, so you would know how to use it properly.

I'm not familiar with Biohome Aquarium Filter Starter Balls, but I would think that if they really cycled your tank, you wouldn't have to add them every month. On my tank I only used TSS once when setting the tank up, and never used it again. In fact, it wasn't even my current tank that I used TSS in, the was my old tank. I just moved the filter media from the old tank's filter into the new tank's filter. So basically I used one bottle of TSS several years ago.

When I'm going to start a new tank, I use the new filter along side the old filter in an established tank. I then use API Stress Coat and some aquarium salt and that's it. No offense to the users of PRIME. I only use API's Stress Coat because at the time it was affordable and I was working with a low budget. Never used TSS, but I found a bottle of TSS for bettas that is unused. Have no clue how I got it as I don't remember ever buying it or having Bettas.

I'm with everyone here that it is unwise to use TSS and Stress coat or any other product along with it. Keep it simple

Are you sure the bottle says Tetra SafeStart for Betta's. I've never heard of that, Plus, there is no difference between bacteria to cycle a betta tank than bacteria to cycle a non-betta tank, so if it truly is TSS for Bett'a's...it's just a marketing gimmick.

I do know some manufactures sell water conditioners for betta's, but once again...marketing gimmick.

I throw a couple in each month when I clean my filter media and/or do a water change as I understand some of my colony will be lost. Each ball is about the size of a pea. When you use them initially, you place the entire bag within the media. To each their own. Many such products, including TSS, suggest ongoing supplementation with water changes etc. That's not to say it's absolutely necessary. Just reduces swings.

Yes I have two Oranda Goldfish in the tank and 1 black Nerite racer snail.

Thank you everyone for replying. I may go ahead and just order another bottle from amazon just Incase. I tested the water tonight. No change yet. But it’s only been 24 hours. Even if it was working I don’t guess it would work that fast lol.

Quick question, the tss comes in two sizes. 3.38 oz that says treats up to 20 gallons and 8.45 oz that treats up to 100 gallons. Before I grabbed the bigger bottle. But my tank is only 38 gallons. Is it completely overkill and unnecessary to get the larger bottle? Or would it be better to go ahead and get big large one? Thank you everyone for your help!

Everything I do is overkill. Get the bigger one. Dose like no one is watching.
