Tetra Safe Start right after Prime

In doing research here, people say to wait extended time after Prime before adding TSS. I may have made rookie mistake. New tank and started a fish in cycle and after setting up treated with Prime to remove chlorine and then put bottle of TSS+ about 30 minutes later. I got a bloom the next day so did I make the TSS+ no good adding it 30 minutes after Prime?

It’s been 5 days with fish in and Ammonia nitrites and nitrates are all 0. Well, API ammonia is 0-0.25- hard to tell color change or not. 7 days total. Prime and TSS ran 2 days before fish.

I have a bottle of Stability if I need to additional treatment but just hoping the Prime and adding TSS so soon didn’t nullify the TSS.

I don't think that they cancel each other out. Prime is a dechlorinator with the side effect to detoxify Ammonia at a lower level. The Ammonia is still available to be utilized by the TSS bacteria.

Thanks! Whew. I am going to put treatments and water parameters under journal. After doing searches on this fantastic forum, there were some posts from a long time ago that were discussing you had to wait extended time because of the ammonia binding of prime before adding the TSS. Glad I didn’t nullify bacteria ammonia. Thanks again Fisch! Greatly appreciated

I always treated my water with Prime, and using TSS. Cycling in general is a patience learning experience.

Sorry that I provided incorrect information. I was talking from own experience without experiencing any negative effect.

From the looks of it, your tank seems to be doing fine, but the prime may have stunted it a little. Prime doesn't completely eradicate any beneficial bacteria, but it'll probably cut the expected results in half. Since you already have Stability, I don't think it would harm you to go ahead and use that daily. Just dose it to however much your tank needs for at least 7 days, but I would go ahead and do it for around 10 or so, just to ensure your tank is getting all the beneficial bacteria that it needs. If the stability doesn't seem to be working, just add some more TetraSafeStart and you should be set!

Started the Stability cycle for 7-10 days just to be sure in case the Prime did nullify the TSS+. Understand that you cant overdose on the bacteria seeding, so will see how it goes - just wanted the seeding in case the TSS bacteria was killed by the encapsulation of Prime. Thanks for all the information - good stuff!

I guess I need to ask one more newbie question. The tank was treated with TSS+ right into tank water. Yesterday when I started the Stability, I added it to filter reservoir. I figured it would spread it out through tank a little better than just dumping it in tank on top of the fish and figured it may help get things started in biofilter. I assume this is OK?

The filter is a Top Fin Silent Stream 75 Power Filter (double outlet). It has the bio and packs that came with it installed. I put the Stability into the tank reservoir on the back of filter.

Hello,

Great question, and interesting that your using different brands for different usage.
I hated the smell of Prime lol, and rather use Nutrafin AquaClear for water treatment, but that's a personal preference I think.
Using the Nutrafin cycle as well when we don't have pre-cycled media for new tanks.

We only use Nutrafin for wc now, and thankfully have enough sponge to start new tanks. TSS is what we used last year, to treat the water before going in but never used Tetra's cycle product. The cycle product we used with TSS was the Nutrafin...never seen a prob but I imagine the properties of Prime compared to Nutrafin products and Tetra is different.

Eventually went with Nutrafin aquasafe and the only additive to our tanks.

There is a pretty good chance that the SafeStart will fail since you didn't wait 24 hours after using Prime to add the SafeStart.

See this threasd:

Are there any negatives with using Seachem and Nutrafin products?
