Tetra parasite guard? help please!

Hello, I just bought some Tetra parasite guard. I'm not sure how to use it because the instructions, to me, are contraindicated. Has anyone ever used this? I just got my water tested and all levels are perfect. I have a 10 gallon tank. The directions say: add one tablet to each 10 gallons of aquarium water. And that's it. Um what? And then under that it says this.
NOTE: For aquariums 40 gallons or greater, and for soft water and/or arid water with low alkalinity, dissolve tablets before adding to aquarium. Remove carbon from filter during use. Treatment may be repeated up to two times with 48 hours between treatments and a 25% water change. For anchor worms, and lice, repeat treatment up to three times, using once a week with a 25% water change.

That makes it sound like all of that is for 40 gallon and up, etc. What do I do for my 10 gallon? Water changes or remove carbon? Help!

The only line that pertains to 40 gallon or larger tanks is the one about "dissolve tablets before adding to aquarium". That is probably to help disperse the meds throughout the larger size tanks.

For your 10 gallon, use 1 tablet. Remove carbon before treatment (carbon will leach out the meds). Wait 2 days in between treatments with a 25% water change in between.

What are you treating for anyways?

How many treatments should I do then? It treats 80 gallons and there's 8 packets. Says one packet over 10 gallons. So today I should add a packet, tomorrow to a water change, and Monday add another? How many doses should I do is what I mean. Thank you for responding I got so confused.

And my platy is having odd colored waste. I just got done treating with triple sulfa form possible columnaris a fee days ago as well. Water level is normal. But his waste is long stringy and clear with white specs so I'm suspecting internal parasites.

Just a guess but it seems to mean if the first dose (one tab for 10gs) does not cure whatever it is you are treating you can repeat the treatment after a water change and a 48 hour waiting period.

It is also giving you instructions if your for "soft water and/or arid water with low alkalinity"

Do I do a water change, remove carbon from filter, drop the tab into the water and tomorrow do a water change and replace the filter and I'm done?

It wouldn't hurt to do a water change right before treatment.
Remove the carbon (because it will remove the medication)
Drop the tab in (depending the softness alkalinity of your water).

Since you can't re-treat for 48 hours, I would wait that long to change the water (if the tank is cycled) or add the carbon back.

The day after tomorrow I was going to do another water change along with replacing the filter. Unless I shouldn't do a water change? This medicine makes me nervous because I usually use API products & I haven't heard much about tetra.

Sounds like a good plan.

Whether or not you change the water, once you add the carbon it will begin to filter out any residual meds.

Some of the directions on medications sure can be confusing!

Good luck!

Hello, I have used tetra parasite guard before with good results!
For a 10 gal, just drop in the tablet AFTER you remove the carbon(charcoal) from the filter. Leave the filter in, just take out the carbon. If its a filter and carbon in one, just cut a slit at the top of filter and dump out the carbon and pop the filter back in.

After 48 hrs is up,I always did a 50% water change and all was fine.
If you still notice smptoms, then you can do another treatment. Wait another 48 hrs. and then do another 50 % wc.

You mentioned you were going to change the filter? What did you mean by that? You should never change out an old filter for a new one UNLESS the filter is falling apart. Your good bacteria live on that filter and once you throw it away, you will loose your cycle and then your fish will die.

If you ever have to replace your filter, make sure you keep the old filter in there with the new filter at least 1 month so the old filter can seed the new filter! You can just cut off the cloth part of the old filter away from the hard plastic and stuff that somewhere in you filter along with the new one. Once a month is up, you can just leave the old piece of filter in there if you want to help out with more bacteria.

P.S. after you are done with your medication, add some carbon back to your filter so it will get the meds out of the water!
