Terracotta Pots vs Cichlid Rocks

HI folks!
In the process of getting my 75gal ready for my cichlids. I was gonna go with cichlid rocks, but they're quite expensive for how many I'll need. Deciding on going with an alternative like terracotta pots. I can get a bunch of them from my local HD for really cheap.

Is this a viable alternative? Will my fish be safe or will it be toxic for my fish?

I've heard of using terracotta pots, and have had great success with it. It should be safe for your fishes. But since terracotta is very porous, it may soak up some unwanted things so make sure you buy them from a reputable store and wash them off really well before use. I have several in my aquarium and my fish love them.
I use regular terracotta, and some pots with marbled patterns.

If you break them make sure you sand down the edges as they can be very rough.

*Update*

I got 3 pots from my local HD for a $1.29ea and a smooth sandblock for another $3. Followed
and NLindsey921's suggestion about sanding all the edges down afterwards. I also washed them in tap water, then washed them again in tank water in my 5gal bucket. I let them soak in the tank water and at the same time did a 30% water change and did a quick gravel cleanup. Placed them in the tank and topped off. Fishes are exploring them. I'll post a pic when the tank clears up.

Thanks for your help ladies!
