Temperature change - How Slowly Should I Lower Temperature?

one other question:

How slowly should I lower the temperature on the thermostat? My tank is running about 82 degrees right now, and to get it where I want it, I need to get it down around 75. Do I do one degree every couple days? I don't want to shock anything by doing a quick drop down to that. Or would that affect the fish?

Thanks
Nathan

I do one degree every couple of hours, others may do it faster or slower.

I would say 1 degree in the morning and then another in the evening, that way in like 3 days it's where you want it and it's easy to remember and easy on the fish.

Thanks! I need to get going so I am ready to get some more fish in. I had to buy a new thermostat, the other one was old and didn't have markings for what temperature it was set at. So I got a new one, and will bring the temperature down.

Hi,
Welcome to Fishlore

For me, I'd just turn the heater down to where you want it, and then just let the tank cool naturally. The process could take a few hours, or longer, but the slow, gradual cooling shouldn't pose any problem, especially in a 45G, where it'll take longer to cool.

I did a few degrees every few hours. Water takes awhile to cool.
