Teacher work rant

Only 3 more weeks till the summer vacation and I finally get a break from students. I swear to god the only good thing about being a teacher is the holidays.

My day started of with a student telling me she could come to class anymore because she was allergic to the sun and her classmate who has been to one class this semester asking me if he could still do the exam if he went to class today for a total of 2 classes out of 19.
My next class had a girl bawling out loud for the whole 90min because the boy she "loves" won't go out with her and doesn't "love" her.
It finally finished after lunch with a class who where supposed to write about their life dreams and desires for a student to hand in a word for word copy of martin luther kings "I have a dream" speech.

Interesting. So, where do you teach school? I see Tianjin China for your location, but it does not sound like you are in China.

Wow. They sound like American students. I guess laziness knows no bounds. Oh well, keep your chin up.

they're not lazy, there isn't a word invented yet to describe how much effort they spend in not having to do work.
They have an elaborate systems of coughs, scratches and downright strange noises to communicate in exams. If I wasn't such an evil teacher I wouldn't allow packets of tissues in the exam but its too much fun to wait until they're finished and then catch them cheating.
The lengths they go to to cheat are unbelievable, Long sleeve shirts and pants in summer when the classroom doesn't have fans or AC, its that hot that most of what they have written over their body has run before the exam even begins but I'm evil so I wait till the end to catch them and kick them out, usually 5 or 10 min before times up.
I had 1 student write on tiny little little pieces of paper he rolled up and hid in his pen so I confiscated his pen and made him write with the inside tube only.
If only they put that much effort into their study.

Wow! I have a Masters in Engineering and in my experience the Chinese students were usually at the top of the class. Now I wonder if they cheated. Lol.

If they are from china and studied unI in china I would bet the balance of my bank account that they have cheated on an exam at least once.

I also taught graduate level and was shocked at how students attempt such behavior! That much effort in learning and they could really do something! I get what you are saying and see it must be a generational thing.

Is this possibly due in part to the 1 child policy? I wonder if it leads to more out-of-control behaviour

Since my husband is in physics, we're used to seeing the best Chinese grad students. They in turn are driven crazy trying to teach Americans who get into college without any basic math skills...

A funny thing--a colleague of my husband's once gave a multiple choice exam where one of the versions accidentally had the answers on it. The students who got that one fared no better than those who didn't have the answers.

endlercollector Its the fault of the education system. In university unless its at one of the few top tier Uni's no one cares if students cheat in exams. If a student fails they just do it again at the beginning of the next semester and if they fail again they just keep doing it until they pass. Plagiarism runs riot over here, out of a class of 40 students I been given a dozen papers that are word for word the same.

I'm not surprised they didn't see the answers, I did a multiple choice mid term exam a few years ago where It actually said in the passage they had to read that the answer for every question was A, no one got 100%

Dont get me wrong they're not bad I usually get 4 or 5 good ones a class the rest just need to use half the work they do not doing any work into actually doing work.

Now I do not feel so bad getting a 3.0 average for my BSEE. For my Masters I had a 3.5, but I thought graduate school was actually easier.

Interesting. How long do you plan to stay teaching PRC? You should keep notes daily. You may end up writing a book or at least a long article for some respectable publication.

Just play GTA 5 and it will all make sense. Sit and watch tv as one of the 3 characters.

Jomolager Ive been here for ten years now and plan on getting married later this year so I will be living here for the foreseeable future. I like living here I have more trouble being home in Australia now.
Today wasn't as bad until it started to rain and the students wanted to finish class 1hr early because they didnt have umbrellas.

Good luck on your upcoming nuptials. You must speak excellent Chinese by now. Keep very good notes or a diary, you could write an amazing book with insiders point of view. . Take pictures too
