TDS and RO topoffs

MikeDaMan34

So random question but I've recently started a red cherry shrimp tank and from previous questions here have been quite successful (so far).

Another question I've run into without finding an answer is about RO water topoffs. When adding in pure RO water (TDS 0) is it best to drip it in?

My thought is that say my tank is 300 TDS and I add in a gallon of RO water, would that technically dilute the TDS causing it to drop? If that is the case how much of a drop is safe? If I add the RO should I drip it in like I did during a water change? Lots of questions but trying to learn and not hurt these little guys.

Thanks!!

How big is your tank? RO water will definitely dilute the TDS. It's best not to change it too fast.... Although I frequently move cherry shrimp from 300 TDS to 150 TDS tanks without issues.

The main concern with RO water is diluting the GH and KH which are needed for healthy growth.... so make sure there is a way for those to be replenished. I wouldn't worry about TDS as much
