Even plants don't like chlorine. Is it Freshwater with no fish? I'd still treat it if it were me.

HI Damian,

Tap water for a planted tank follows the same rules as for a tank with fish. let it age first. Chlorine is just as bad for plants as it is for fish.

Sorry Calli, didn't mean to ditto you without credit; I didn't see your post until after I'd posted.

wisecrackerz, I think that's called ninja'd, and you can't help it if you're typing at the same time. Great minds think alike, don't you think?

I thought ninja'd was like the past tense of the verb "ninja" as in "he ninja'd down the street." learn something everyday and yes, our mutual awareness of the Cl problem speaks to our fish-love lol.

Ninja'd works because you both typed, past tense, simultaneously. Speed of ninja.

The reason we can get away with using tap water on our potted plants and yards it the dirt filtering effects and the dry out period but they still don’t like it. Totally submerged plants in tap water don’t have that filtering effect so it does them more harm. I started using my old tank water to water my wife’s house plants and they truly love the nitrate rich, chlorine free water. No they haven’t told me so personally but you can see it in the growth difference.

I experianced the same results with my outdoor annuals.

I thought I was a freak for using my goldfish water for my brother's bamboo. I thought it might appreciate the nutrients, as it's just in water; I just told everybody I was saving water.

My neighbors in my last apartment were so worried about the Cl in the city water that they aged the water they used for their garden in a kiddie pool in the yard. When I gave them my old dechlorinator (I use a different kind now), they were so shocked that it existed, and so happy to find it that they made me cookies.
delicious, help-your-neighbor-save-their-plants cookies.
