Tank Sizes for Bettas (female, male, king male, king female)

Hello, I'm just curious what people think a good tank size for the varieties of Betta would be. I know the minimum for a Betta is 5 gallons. For context, king bettas are just large bettas, I think they are also called giant bettas. Anyway, my current thoughts about this is...

Female Betta- 6 gallons for 1 and a handful of snails and/or shrimp

Male Betta- 10 gallons for 1 and a handful of snails and/or shrimp

King Female Betta- 14 gallons for 1 and a handful of snails and/or shrimp

King Male Betta- 20 gallons for 1 and a handful of snails and/or shrimp

The only thing I'm wondering is if males need more space than the females or if they are about the same. I just was curious if these tank sizes would work well for these types of bettas.

My king males are all in 20g's. Looks a bit big on them maybe, but they enjoy the space.

Ok, that works for me. I do already have 20 gallon long for my king male. Currently he is in a cycled 10 gallon just while the other cycles. Anyway, he looks HUGE in that 10 gallon!

I'm mostly curious on the female king and male normal sized bettas. Does a female king need 20 gallons or will something like a 15 gallon do? Same for the normal sized male but with a 6 gallon tank. Again, these would be single fish tanks with snails/shrimp if the bettas will tolerate them.

Depends on activity level of the fish. I like to put bettas in 10 gal myself, but they have all done great for me in 5 gal tanks as well, at least the ones i had in 5 gal tanks. I like to have the extra space for aesthetic purposes as well as give them room to explore.

But since these days i am only interested in kings, i stick with 20s.

Hey, I just came across this thread and I'd like to give my 2 cents...female bettas are often more active and therefore need more space IMO. Long-finned males are typically less active so a small tank will suffice (my long-finned males get 15G tanks each). Contrary to popular belief, females aren't smaller than males. It depends on care & genetics; a stunted/dwarf male is smaller than a giant female and vise versa...

I don't have "minimums". A minimum is the least a betta can have to be fine. 5G seems too small for me - I only use this for hospital or QT tanks. I provide a 15G as a "minimum" but obviously this depends on the fish themselves. A lazy or weak, long-finned male will get a 10-15G; an active girl gets a 20 Long etc. My "minimum" for giants aka "Kings" is 29G though some say it's excessive...

IMHO it depends on the personality of your betta. Some prefer large tanks to explore; some require small/shallow ones for health reasons. I suggest identifying the activity level of your fish then deciding based on that. Hope this helps! :)

Minimum for all for me is 5g
Kings minimum 10g

That's them living 100% alone other than maybe a snail. I prefer larger but those are my "minimums"

Male Full moon/half moon tails imo need a 10 gallon. They really enjoy a swim, swim and then glide in tank. it's a joy to watch.

My Black Samurai is in a 20 tall. He definitely needs the extra room as he's extremely active swimmer. Kio are imo the same way, tight body they are like bullets in the water. my Blue is in 15 gallon bow front- which is around a tall 10 gallon. He does fine.

My king was in my community tank 38 gallon and the most submissive male I have ever seen. He was a gentle giant. He was very active but usually stayed near half of the tank by filter.

females = anything 5 gallon plus. But I usually do sorority/harem with them.
