OK as some of you may have known I got a 5 gallon tank (that is going to be home of a betta and some ottos)from a freiend who could know longer keep it.
Day1) I cleaned the tank and equpiment and boiled 2 rocks
Day 2)washed the gravel put the rocks and 2 plants from my 20 gallon in the tank and started the cycle(fishless)
Day 3)continued the fishless cycle

P.S. pictures will be posted soon

Re: Tank journal

Day 4-7)pH 8.4~ Ammonia 0.25~ Nitrire 0~ Nitrate 0
(nothing done)

Re: Tank journal

Speaking of tank journals, I keep a "Fish Diary". It's a small spiral book, it has a place on the front cover for a picture, which I placed a picture of my fish in it, . And every time I changed the water, do a water reading, or generally do anything to my fish tanks, I write it in my Fish Diary. This is a great way to keep up with water changes, and how your fish are doing. I can look back and read about my fish and how they were doing a month or so ago. It's kinda like a "Baby Book" thing.

Re: Tank journal

If your ammonia is 0, Nitrites are 0 and Nitrates are 20 then your cycle is done.
Unless I read your numbers wrong.

Re: Tank journal

did you do a water change or something? It looks like something upset your cycle and set it back some. Maybe put you into a minI cycle situation. I guess you have some more cycling to do. I am glad you did not have your Cories in there yet too. They don't do well in a partially cycled tank.

I went back tonight and looked at Bruce's pictures again and I enlarged them to full size by clicking on them. You have some beautiful pictures of him and he is such a pretty fish. You should be very proud of your pictures and the really cool fish he is. Bruce you are a handome fellow.

I have been tanking pictures for about 3 years now (all digital) so that may help some what. thanks for the complament

50w over a 5 gallon is tons and you'l probably have tons of algae growth. 10w would be sufficent and 20w would be max you should have. If you do get 20w depending on how it goes you very well might need co2 and ferts. Looks good.

I wouldn't add more cories until later because they really should only be added to mature tanks and they perfer groups of 5 or more. Are you planning on ferts soon.
