Tank Invader

I didn't know where else to post this, since I primarily keep betta tanks. So I go to poke my head in my fish room before I go to bed, and I see something dart in my dumbo Opal's tank. She's asleep on the gravel, so it's not her. It's tiny, and it darts into a ceramic pot in her tank. I call my sister in and have her shine her phone light in there, and we find that it's A BABY FISH. No idea where it came from, unless Opal is the Virgin Mary of fish. The tank's been established for six months, no tank mates. We can't even tell what kind of baby fish it is. The only thing I can imagine is an egg hitched a ride on some water sprite I bought two weeks ago from a LFS.

Even stranger is how it lived without food or nutrients, unless it was eating any of Opal's wastes or any plant wastes. Opal is also a bit of a shark, and I feel like she would have eaten anything this tiny! I'm really at a loss. I pulled the little guy out, put him in a temporary holding tank with part of an almond leaf and a plant. Luckily, I had some HikarI First Bites, and fed it too. When it's not 2:30 AM, I'll try to get some better pictures, and hopefully he makes it through the night.

I thought so too. A friend of mine thinks it might be a baby guppy. I'm going to the same LFS today to see if they have any fish in their plant tank, and to ask about it. I'll probably try to find a more suitable container for it too. I guess for the time being, I'm the mom of a mysterious fish baby. I'll update again later with more info.

Update! It's a lampeye killifish! The fish store said we could bring it back, but I think I might keep it.

Just transferred my crowntail male into a 6.5 gallon, and put the killie into his old 3.5 gallon. What a weird adventure this has been!

Killifish are my favourite behind Bettas. I had some about 10years ago now and they were such characters!
Mine were really good jumpers so just make sure you have a lid but given you keep Bettas I’m sure your tanks probably have lids anyway
Name suggestion incase you need some , Vader
Short for invader

We wound up naming it Loki, since we already have a veil tail named Thor and a king betta named Odin. It seemed to fit!
