Will this filter work for goldfish in a 55 or 50 gallon tank ?

What kind of filter would this tank need for goldfish? And what does this kind of filter do ?

I would use a slightly larger filter because of goldfish have quite a large bioload. You'd probably be better off using 2 75 gallon rated Bacto Surge sponge filters. You also need airline tubing and a large air pump in order for sponge filters to work.

I would use a canister filter or large HOB for a goldfish tank, as they are very messy. Sponge filters aren't great mechanical filters.

That sponge filter looks much better and bigger.
You also need airline tubing, and I would actually recommend getting the Tetra Whisper air pump for 60-100 gallons. It's a quiet, reliable pump that also comes with accessories for the tubing.

Canisters and HOBs are okay but as someone who's breeds and shows high-grade fancy goldfish, I believe sponge filters are more economical and just as good. Many, many breeders and collectors I know only use sponge filters for their tanks. Things like waste and debris can easily be cleaned up with a siphon.

It depends on how much maintenance you want to do on the tank. Using a canister would allow you to not have to gravel vac as often, as a lot of the debris is picked up the the filter. And canister filters can be relatively inexpensive as well (particularly if you buy used like I do. I prefer them over sponge filters for my larger tanks, due to the reduced maintenance needed.

With goldfish you probably should use two of the sponge filters.

Yea, I get what you mean and I totally agree. It depends on how much you maintain your tank.
