Has anyone ever tried a custom made tank divider and trying it diagonally across the tank or is this just bad thinking on my part??

Diagonally should be fine. Only downside I can think of is if there is some aggression between fish and fish can get easily cornered in the wedge. Or if it goes clear diagonal there would be a fish in the back that you can't see as easily from the front. Egg crate for diffusing light fixtures would work well. Theres a new product sold as When a piece is just a little too big to fit directly across the tank, I divide it with a little angle.

I was thinking while it's the same amount of space may give then more room to swim horizontally

Could put some plants in the corners. I couldn't see the fish in the back as well but I could see it good enough from the side
