Tank Cleaning - Betta In Tank?

so I’ve done fish out cleanings , scooping the betta in a specified small container labeled for each fish
However yesterday my wife did the 50% change for Niko and either during the scooping ( which was gentle and easy as mostly he swims into it out of interest) or maybe he happened to find one small spot on a sanded ornament that I missed somehow in the few minutes following change - he has a little scrap on his head , it’s like a scale came off
I’ll add a photo soon

Anyway my question is, do you water change with fish In ? Or take betta our first?
My past and current Bettas all were way too interested in the siphon and try to get in the bottom of it and make the task way more difficult hence why I no longer try , but yesterday spotting the small spot on Nikos head I’m not sure if I should try again

I never take fish out to clean. Only time I do is when I'm draining a pond and scrubbing the whole thing. My betta used to just stay near the siphon and stare at it but didn't get in the way. I think it's less stressful for them than being caught each time. Also if their container is quite small anf they are out for any length of time it's quite likely their water will cool down and they could get a shock when they go back in the tank.

Oh I always re acclimate them but I am thinking I’m best to try again with siphoning while In , Niko especially ,out of all my past Bettas even , tries really hard to get up the siphon tube - don’t know what he thinks is in there but he and I both will get the fright of our lives if he succeeds...

I haven’t changed Kaido’s yet as I only got him yesterday - but he’s a speedy active wee guy so he worries he too haha! I guess the activeness is a plakat thing??

I leave my bettas in. They leave the siphon alone. Try rubberbanding a mesh fabric to the hose. Yes the activeness is a plakat thing.

Oh cool cause his personality is awesome

Will the mesh rubberbanded on still allow for gravel cleaning ?

I have to do large water changes on guppy fry tanks, and always put a piece of panty hose over the siphon when I do My betta leaves the siphon alone, so I have never removed him when I do water changes--scared the liver out of my son the time I did a 75% water change and left him in there. It got down to about 2 inches of water, so Ocean was fine, but my son was in hysterics >_<

I think it depends on the size of the mesh--"fishnet" stocking size would, real fishnet would not do a great job, and pantyhose definitely prevents it.

I think this is the size mesh meant, which would allow for gravel cleaning:
