Tank chemical smell...

40 galllon tank today:
pH at 7.4
Ammonia at 010 ppm
Nitrite at 0 ppm
Nitrate at 10 ppm

Can I add Ich X to a 25 percent water change in my 10 gal Hospital tank? I had both my goldfish in the 40 gallon when I had an over powering chemical smell so bad I could taste it.
I use API Stress Coat and API Quick start w a 40 percent water change on the 27th because of chemical smell and both fish were not doing good all of a sudden. Neither API products say what their ingredients are! Not even at the government's site online. Ugh.
I haven't done a water change in 30 hrs in the 10 gallon tank but just now took out another 25 percent water in 10 gallon because my nieces fed them a lot of food when I wasn't looking. The 10 gallon was cycled when I put both fish in on the 27th. They have about 4 or 5 Ichs on them that I can see today so need to treat the asap. Last Ich X treatment was on the 26th. It's been ruff on them so I have been waiting since the 27th due to stress from the chemical emergency & they are better now but I don't want them to go thru to much. This is a bummer. Anyone ever have that chemical smell w Ich X and API Stress coat and quick start?

I accidently put 40 gallon tank in the Test results when I meant 10 gallon tank test results

You could put a bag of carbon in the tank, but it would absorb the meds as well.

Hello,

I would do a water change to get the chemicals out of your tank. In the future, I would try to treat the fish in a small container with your aquarium water. Then after you treat them, put them back in the regular aquarium. This way you are not treating the entire aquarium. And follow the directions on the bottle. You will be fine. Just do small water changes until the chemical smell goes away. You don't need a filter or anything in the treatment dish or container. Since you are just treating and then putting them back in the aquarium.

Is your ammonia 0.10 or is it actually 10ppm. If it’s 10ppm your smelling the ammonia and any fish in that tank could die quickly.

Is it two goldfish in a 10 gallon? Battling ich? How big are the goldfish? What kind/type?

You'll need to change at least 50% water daily to keep ammonia down and help the cycle catch up to the bioload. I'll wait for the clarification on the ammonia test, but if it's 10ppm, you should do a 100% water change!

Thanku so much for your advice I really appreciate it I do have them in my 10 gallon now since the 28th I believe. I would have to look at my fish diary. Come to find out there is sulfonate or sulfoxylate in my API Stress Coat conditioner that I use to dechlorinate so that is where the bad chemical reaction is coming from. I emptied out my 40 gallon tank and started over. Gonna add a conditioner/dechlorinator that doesn't contain sulfonate and 1 dose of API Quick start(which has no sulffonate). Then gonna let it cycle for a couple weeks or till it's cycled. I just don't know which conditioner doesn't have sulfonate. If u know of one that be great but I will do my research & find out. Until I get the API Stress coat out of my 10 gallon hospital tank I figured I would add aqua salt and raise the temperature to treat the remaining Ich. In my 40 gal tank I have a Marineland filter w the bio filter & carbon filter in it. My fish pic on each other a bit (but not bad at all) since they r in the 10 gal so hoping to get my 40 gal tank cycled as soon as possible. Thanku so much again for your help!

It actually at 0.10 for the ammonia
My ammonia readings go from 0 to 0.25ppm at the most but my tap water has 0.20ppm in it also.
Thanku for your help I really appreciate it

I had fintails gold fish is about 6 months old and my Common Gold fish is 1 & a half yrs old. They are coming to the closer end of their Ich infestation. Been treating them since end of November in their 40 gallon tank but when the chemical smell hit & they both started reacting badly to it I did water changes but that wasn't working fast enough so I moved them to my 10 gallon hospital tank that was already cycled. I found out that there is sulfonate in API Stress Coat that I used for dechlorinating tap water I use for water changes & that is bad to use with Ich X which is where the chemical smell was coming from.. So now I need to find a dechlorinator/water conditioner that doesn't have any kind of sulfonates in it. If you know of what that b great. I will do research. I started completely over with my 40 gal tank and will try to get it cycle as soon as possible because my 2 Goldfish do not like the 10 gallon very much. I am adding aqua salt and raising the temperature to treat the ich in the 10 gallon tank until I get all the API Stress Coat out then if I have to I will treat them w Ich X again. I have been treating them in the 40 gal with Ich X since November so they don't have many Ich left but will treat them for at least 10 more days if not 14 more days. Prob do Ich X every other day after I get the API out of their 10 gal tank that they r in. I will be keeping them in the 10 until my 40 gallon tank is cycled. Any advice would be great Thanku very much

I would use seachem prime for a dechlorinator. It is concentrated and lasts a long time. I also use Tetra Safe Start Plus to start my fish in cycle. These two have worked for me. I do not know about the others. I only use these. I also recommend API master test kit for fresh water to test your water and tap water. The less you put into your aquarium the better.

Idk if Prime has sulfacants, but that's what I and most hobbyists are using. It is advised however to wait 1hr after using Prime declorinator before dosing meds.

Personally I like the aquarium salt idea. Some ich strains may be immune, but I have always had great success treating ich with salt and goldfish are ok with it. Salt will also help neutralize nitrite poisoning, helpful while your tank is recycling. Daily water changes, good for sucking out ich parasites in the substrate before they find a host and good to keep water quality up. They need good water quality and nutrition to fight the ich. I might use the 40 gallon and recycle it with fish in, use BB from the 10g. If you can do daily water changes and protect with Prime, it might be better for them in a bigger tank. Easier to keep water quality as well. Let me know what you think.

I sometimes use Stress Coat and have used it together with quick start, can't say I've ever noticed any smell coming from my tank when doing so tbh.

It was the stress coat and Ich X medication that caused the chemical reaction because stress coat has Sulfonates in it which can Not be uses w Ich-X med. Quick start does not have Sulfonates in it so I can use it w Ich X med.
