I recently bought my Betta from petco in June as a baby and have kept him in a 5 gallon, heated and filtered tank. However, his tail seems to be growing oddly. The top part of his tail is folded and the bottom seems scrunched up. What is wrong? Is there anything I can do to help him?

Might be the angle but he looks a bit bloated too.

I'd be more concerned with the fact that he is very bloated.

What do you feed him and what are his tank parameters?

Normally a pinch twice daily, and currently I am not sure.

Parameters are paramount for us, I suggest you get those figured out.

A pinch?? Can you please take a "pinch" of how much you normally feed, drop it on a paper and count them out?

I'm assuming 5-10 normally. Depending what he eats within 2 mins as the food instructs.

Twice a day? Oh dear. You are overfeeding by A LOT, then. You can only feed 4-6 pallets daily. For now, you shouldn't be feeding anything at all for the next day or two, that bloat needs to go down asap... is he having poops? For a good measure, feed him a piece of shelled cooked pea after you fast him for those two days.

@ tail - I think it's growing funky because his body shouldn't be that shape. Genetics can also play a role, but in your case I think it's obvious what the problem is. A healthy betta should look like this:

You can get your water tested for free at Petsmart, just bring them some and they will do it for you.

Thanks, I'll definitely do that. I didn't mean to over feed, the new food I bought states: "feed six pellets in the morning and six at night" so I just went with that.

Sounds like a marketing scam to me. So you go through food faster and have to buy more. More money for the company,

It's good business. The more you feed, the faster you will have to buy new food... and a new fish. :)

See how he looks in a few days. Bettas that are prone to bloat do just fine on 2-3 pre-soaked pallets a day if that's the regiment that keeps the bloat down. Though we are not at that point yet.
