Tahitian Moon Sand And Live Plants.

HI everyone.

I keep reading from a lot of members on different forums that Tahitian Moon sands isn't that good for plants because the grain is very fine and a bunch of other stuff. Is this true that live plants have trouble in this sand? Anyone experienced anything about this sand with live plants or living creatures in their aquarium to dissuade from buying this sand? Let's face it it is pretty but expansive. I'd rather keep my money if people discovered this sand leads to problem of any kind in the aquaria world.

Thank you in advance gentlemen.

I’ve had the white version of that sand. No issues with plants growing, but it’s so fine that it clouds up easily. If you want to use black sand, many (including myself) use black diamond blasting sand. I have it in 2 planted tanks and I’m very happy with it. It’s also pretty cheap at $8 for 50#. I found it at tractor supply. I used the medium grit, but others I know used the fine grit with no problems. It does take a good bit of washing, but not too bad.

I have Tahitian Moon in my 30 gallon and it works great for the plants. Haven't had any issues with it.

It’s made of coal slag, so if there’s another brand of the same stuff, it may be worth looking into.
Sometimes I forget not everyone is in the US.

It doesn't nearly have as much nutrients as Stratum. Haven't heard of anyone having success with any carpet plants (maybe dwarf sag). Coral based, so probably raises pH. I'd pass, but that's just me.

What do you recommend for plants and good look? Mix of sand and mineral soil?

I heard that the easier species of DHG (eleocharis parvula) can grow well in just Seachem Flourite sand with root tabs.

I wouldn't mix the soil with the gravel as that'll just make a mess. Just cap the 1" mineralize soil with 1" of gravel.
