Switching from flake to pellet, help

Hi. First post here. Today I switched from flake food to pellet food. However, when I put the pellet food in for the first time, hardly any of the fish ate. I have several small tetras and rasboras, and they would take the food into their mouth, then spit it out. Is there any trick to getting them to make the switch? I was using ON Formula One flake, and switched to NLS thera a pellets, 1mm.

Is it just a waiting till they take it thing, or is there a trick to getting them to attack it?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

They'll start eating it soon enough

They will usually adjust, it may be too large for them or bigger than they 'like' lol... try crushing it up into smaller pieces, that might help.

I've fed mine the 1 mm NLS since I got them - I don't think it's too big. But that's a god tip.

Its definitely not too big, but given that they are used to flakes that are paper thin and 'soft' a lot of fish don't take well at first to pellets that are bigger and 'hard' ... picky creatures LOL

Good morning and Welcome to Fish Lore!

Agreed. Keep trying with the pellets. The fish will accept it before too long.

Too, if you would be so kind, please complete your Aquarium Profile Information.

You can access the Profile by clicking on My Settings in the blue bar close to the top of the screen. In the drop down box, click on Edit Aquarium Info. Be sure to hit SAVE at the bottom of the page once you're done.

This will help others with their responses to various questions that you may have.

Thanks and I hope you enjoy the site!

None of my smaller fish would take Thera A in 1mm. I have the Small Fish Formula now but before that I just crushed up my 1mm pellets and they take them much better.

well I borrowed a hand full of the small community pellets from my uncle, and all the fishe responded better to those. They still aren't going crazy for them like they did the flake, but they didnt hesitate to eat either.

Is it good to feed both the NLS pellets and flake, or should I feed the NLS pellets exclusively?

I read somewhere (maybe on here) that it is good to feed pellets in the morning, and flakes in the evening as the flakes are easier to digest. Any truth or method to that?

thanks

There's no need to continue feeding the flakes.

Dont know about the digestive issue... but a variety of foods doesn't hurt either, it can actually be a benefit as far as overall nutrients, and why waste food you already paid for!

When they get hungry enough they will gobble it down really quickly. NLS is a great pellet, soaking them in a little garlic juice every week is also great for them. It takes a while to get them to eat it sometimes too but eventually they learn it's good.

Not if the other food you are feeding is low quality. A lot of flake foods have a high amount of undigestable content. I would throw the old stuff out - I wouldn't feed an inferior food just because I have it.

I disagree with the idea that more than one staple food should be fed. If you are feeding a high quality food, like NLS, there is no need to feed anything else. It has everything that's needed for complete nutrition. Of course it's good to feed other TYPES of food, like veggies and brine shrimp and what not. But feeding multiple processed foods? There's no point.

I didnt say that more than one should be fed, just that you could if you wanted and it wouldnt hurt... obviously you don't need or have to.
