Switching from artificial to live plants

Cassdaddy

So I have a 20 gallon tall fish tank that I've had running for about 4 years with standard aquarium gravel, artificial decor, and a single golden wonder killi. Recently I've been interested in switching from artificial plants to live plants, but I don't know which plants to start with. Also, would I need to switch my aquarium gravel out for different substrate?

You should look into what lighting you have. Assuming you want a low-maintenance (low-tech) setup, you want low to medium lighting for like 6 or 7 hours a day (I have a finnex stingray and that works pretty well). Add some seachem root tabs to your regular gravel substrate and you should be able to grow some jungle val and crypts. Floating plants are really easy (water lettuce, frogbit, etc) and help with algae. I did this with my 20 gal tall tank (regular gravel) and it's worked out pretty well.
