Had a hang-off-the back style filter on the 55 gallon, switching to a 10 gallon and the filter wont fit...but it does have a sponge filter. Any thoughts on how to get the new one up and running quickly? I assume syphon water from the 55 to the 10, but how do I get the BB from the old filter to the new one?

Take some of the sponge material from the 55 gallon filter and wrap it around the sponge filter and use a rubber band to hold it in place. Give it a week or two to seed.

av8er , great question.

When you mentioned it has a sponge filter, do you mean that the 55 gallon HOB uses sponges inside of it, or that you had a separate sponge filter driven by an air pump?

Did the 55 gallon filter uses cartridges?
