HI I have a 10 gal tank I've had for 2years & I bought a 29 gal tank I set up yesterday. In my 10 gal I have 2 med size angelfish I zebra tetra & 1 huge Pleco. How long should I wait before I put them in the new 29 gal tank? Is there anything I need from the 10 gal tank to make the new 29 gal tank better for them? Thank you

What would help the most is the filter media from your 10 gallon tank. If you were planning on using the same filter for your 29 gallon tank then I would just move the whole filter over without cleaning or changing any of the filter media. Although I am thinking that if you are using a HOB(hang on back) filter on your 10 gallon it would be a little too small for your 29 gallon tank.

If you are planning on getting a new filter for your 29 gallon tank then I would take all media from the old filter and put it in the new filter.

Why am I saying this? It's because your old filter's media is full of the good beneficial bacteria that you need to help cycle your new tank.

Good Luck!

I have a new filter running in my 29 gal tank. It is now very cloudy. So can I just scrape the gunk off if the 10 gal filter into the 29 gal filter? Thank you for helping. I've never switchedtanks before only ever had the 10gal

What I have found is thay when setting up a new tank it is not always possible to share filter media... so if that's the case... what I would do is take the old filter media and rinse it in the new tank... or just drop it in there and squeeze it out as much as you can... it will help to seed the new filter and help speed up the cycling process. If your old filter media will fit inside the new filter along with the media that it comes with then do that as its the best option... gunk scraping is not usually a good idea as its mostly old food and or dead plant material and bits of gosh knkws what else... most of the bacteria builds up in the media itself... so that's what you want to keep... gunk bad media good! Ok good luck

Missyb57 I agree with what tracey says here, except you don't have to scrape all the junk if you can take the old filter and put it into a container and then get some dechlorinated tank tank water and add it to the container with the old filter in it. Swish the old filter around in the water and then take that water and put it in your new filter. You can then put the filter back into the old filter. When adding the water into the new filter can you turn off the filter for a bit. Make sure that you take out any water in the filter before adding that filter water. The point is to try to get the bacteria on your new filter and if your filter is running it kinda defeats the purpose when the bacteria will flow into the tank and then eventually into the filter. But by then the good bacteria will be thinned out Are you keeping anything in the 10 gallon? Do you have a fish store close to where you live? If you do and if they carry either.........

Seachem Stability
Fluval cycle concentrated biological booster
Tetra safe start

these products have bacteria in them to help you cycle your tank. It's beneficial bacteria in a bottle. These are good but your old filter media is better.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Good Luck!

Hi. Welcome! Even easier : run your filter from the 10 gallon along side the new filter Have both filters running on the new tank for about a month, then you should be able to remove the 10 gal filter with minimal impact on your cycle. So, if you can fit it in the new tank just move the older filter & fish & whatever else you want to the new tank...

I put the filter packet from the 10 gal inside the 29 gal behind the new filter packet. Now I can't even see through the water. Should I change out some of the water? How long do I do this process before its safe to move my fish over? Thank you all for helping

Yes id change the water to about 50% or more. And see if that helps. Do you have a test kit can you check your water perameters?

You can also move over some decorations if you have any. It's not as good as the filter suggestions above, but it's still helpful.
