Surface agitation for fancy goldfish

How much surface agitation do I need for fancy goldfish I have a 6x2ft surface area and I am currently running an aqua one nautilus 2700 with spry bar attachment, 1000Lph submersible UV sterilizer with pump head and a 1000 Lph submersible filter with pump head.

when I have the spray bar and 2 pump heads shooting water up through the surfaceI I get heaps of agitation but it’s quite noisy and my wife hates it. It also creates heaps of micro bubbles making the tank water look unclear. I was wondering if I changed it so the water surface has ripples in it but no bubbles is that enough agitation for fancy goldfish? It would get rid of my micro bubble problem and the noise problem And I love the look of a peaceful silent tank (hate The look of air stones and bubbler etc) added picture of my tank for reference

Sounds good mate

Although goldfish need a good amount of oxygen, that sounds fine. Of course that does depend on the "ripples" themselves...If there is a pretty good surface agitation and the fish are acting fine, then it should be good.

I will try it for a few days. If it is a surface agitation problem what should i expect to notice behaviour wise from the fish? will they be sitting on the bottom gasping at the top clamped fins etc?

Can you give me a better indication of what "good" surface agitation is? what would it look like bigger ripples or just will small ripples covering most of the surface of the tank?

I would try having bigger ripples. Oxygenation depends on a lot of things, if your fish are acting normal after you've turned all the "extra stuff" off, then you probably have enough aeration.

DAY 1
I have set it up so there is no more micro bubbles and all the filters and powerheads are running silent. fish seem to be happy, active and eating. I have noticed that they have been coming to the surface a little bit more but not the constant gasping for air behaviours that can be associated with high ammonia levels. The surface agitation is covering about 85% of the surface area. I will try to take some pictures but im not sure how clearly you can see how much agitation there is

Looks pretty good to me. I can see a good amount of surface movement

Day 4
Fish seem to be going well. No signs of stress or fatigue of lack of oxygen looks like they have enough and are active and eating well

Very beautiful tank! It seems to be enough agitation since the O2 levels in the water depend on the movement of water at the point where the water meets the air... yours appears to be in nice steady motion. Also your cute little guys seem to be acting just fine. It is a common belief that goldfish do not like very much agition in their water (ie bubblers, strong current etc...) since it isn’t how they exist in the wild. It’s good to keep in mind that goldfish as we know them and as we live with them as family members do not exist or live at all in the wild, except for the comet type goldfish. Fancies are all completely domestic, having been manipulated and bred by humans. I find that my fancies LOVE the agitation in their 55 gallon tank from our filter with the spray bar, a large air bar and 2 other air stones. Our telescope Ryukin “Morris” is kind of a bubble fiend and loves to swim face first into the stream of bubbles from the
air stones. But he is a bit of a character so I’m sure the amount he loves them isn’t the norm for most fancy goldfish. I’m not an expert only an experiencer but hopefully this helps.

Again, beautiful tank and beautiful babies!

Here’s a pic of Morris and our Ranchu TJ playing the bubbles.

I've never heard of that one... Agitation is only a problem if it pushes them around, otherwise its beneficial. Extra oxygen is not bad, especially since goldies need it.

I guess you are referring to “that one” being what I said about goldfish not usually liking a lot of agitation? If so than I was/am totally in agreement with you. I had never heard that until pretty recently when over and over I kept reading so many things where it was being stated that goldfish prefer more still type of water...yet I had always thought they needed more agitation and I had always seen them with more in their tanks or even ponds. I suppose I just thought I would maybe mention that if others had heard the same things that it was not accurate info.
