While I was doing a water change this morning I noticed a baby fish swimming around apparently the female platy I brought home the other day was pregnant.... What now its been a few hours and all I can see is the one fry. Mothers tummy still seems large is it common for platies to have only one fry? Will there be more to come? I don't have a breeder box I was thinking of putting her in the large fish net.... I have hair grass and other plants for hiding spaces. I have hikarI first bites for food... I'm at a lost on what to do next. PLEASE HELP!!

I don't have problems with platy fry but I do have problems with mollies. How heavily is your tank planted? If it's very planted you can let them chance it. If not then it's very likely that most of the fry will get eaten. Having one fry seems like either there are more to come, the rest have been eaten, or the platy is young and she hasn't had many. I normally feed my molly fry brine shrimp and for my middle 7/8 I got java moss to protect them. About the fish net, I have never done that, but it may injure the fry or stress them out, so unless you really want a bunch of fry to survive, I wouldn't

She is very small so I assume is young kinda hard to believe she is a mother already. Have dwarf water lettuce coming next week. I do have a dwarf gourami I'm sure he might eat them all up and a syno catfish. How many fry would a yound first time mother have? I would like to keep as many alive as possible a have some family members interested.

I don't know the amount new mums have, but my 5 month old molly had about 5. I only have 3 left now, although they could be the 5 month old's mums fry. Your tank isn't as planted as mine, so chances are one might survive if you're lucky. The other fish will most likely eat them though.

Thanks I appreciate it. How long does it usually take for the mother to birth all the babies?
