Suprise! babies are born

I had babies but I didn't know my fish was pregnant her belly wasn't big and I saw that you can see through the molly's skin how else will I know for next time. Because I didn't know and they got sucked up in my filter and when I cleaned my tank I saw them there were only 3 so I think the rest died. How do I know for next time the signs of pregnancy and when to move the female molly to a different tank?

 

Even easier would be to get a pre filter sponge for the intake so they dont get sucked up!

Odds are they were an edible snack.

My molly only birthed once which I missed, but I notice with my platys that the tail drops when birth is imminent. And they look for a secluded spot and get real quiet. When birthing is happening....the other fish are darting in and out. I imagine looking for snacks

That's the extent of my observations so far.

 

How do I also clean the water without sucking them up?

 

Vacuum carefully and check the bucket before you dump it out. Get a white bucket so you can see them.

Idk I found the filter like 2 hours ago I think. and they were in there I didn't see her lay any

So her belly may just still be puffed out from the babies being in there then. Just keep an eye on her and get a filter intake sponge in the mean time.

I have only seen grey ones but you may be able to find white somewhere. They should not get stuck on it but then you could see if they do.

btw, livebearers are pretty much pregnant all the time from when they get mature to a few months before birth, also they can store sperm for like 8 broods/litters, which = so many babies.

Here's my 2 females....Dolly and Sunflower.
And Donnie the male. Donnie and Dolly are Dalmatian mollies and really looked dalmatian when I got them. But now...hardly any white at all.

I'm sorry. I have no clue. I'm a year plus into the fish world and every experience I've had is a new one. That's not something I've come across. Maybe if you post in the Freshwater Fish Health forum someone might recognize it

Yeah here you go it looks a little different because the piece of his scales hanging is gone
