So I've had this 200l tank running for a month I used some tetra safe start combined with putting some bacteria from other filter onto mesh and everything was fine and put in 2 baby fish in it but then 1 of my fish was getting bullied in another tank and near dead at the time so I put him in the 200l amd he came round and fins started to regrow he was in there like 2/3 weeks I go out every day and check these fish and space of 24 hours I went out the bullied 1 from before was flopped over and near dead and another's eyes were looked like he had been bashing into stuff like crazy when has loads of space so I took them out and put them in bucket with heater and bare in mind the smallest fish was fine looking and I know for a fact he didn't hurt the other fish, I think must be internal parasite and also the bullied fish from before died but his eyes looked fine

I checked bucket hourly and fish swimming fine no fights or nipping then all of a sudden the 1 with the eyes was near dead I thought maybe from stress of a small tank, so I stuck him in 1 my other tanks (bad idea I know) but after about 20 seconds a fish nipped at him so I got him out immediately and he ended up dying in bucket and his eyes ended up gone but no one touched them he's to quick

Now today a 14" pleco which was in the tank of which I put the fish into for 20 seconds looked sick so kept eye and told family they said he looks fine he always lies about but then a space of couple hours 1 his eyes were red and sore so I took out half the tank water and vacuumed the gravel for parasites and cleaned filter media in the dirty tank Water removed and readded clean water and put dechlorinater in each bucket it worked out 2ml in each to go to bed for a few hours to see his eye is gone and other is very red and again I'm convinced no fish have touched him there just swimming about and I left lights on aswell

I haven't a clue what to do and In that tank pleco is in has fish at 4-5 years old

the bucket is clean for water changes I bought a new 1

What are your parameters? It's possible that your cycle wasn't able to handle the additional bioload and you had spikes.

Did you do a water change on the tank with the issues? That would be the first thing I did. Do a large water change.

Definitely need to test your water. Something is off with your parameters it sounds like.

Well the other tank would've had a lot less fish in it but it was up for a month so assumed it was fine till seen sick fish in it in space of 25 hours as his eyes looked bad and another was near dead so put into bucket and got worse so I put him into my biggest tank thinking maybe stressed cause nowhere to swim and was only in about 20 seconds and I took him out as 1 nipped at him and he died later on that night but the day after now my pleco has died with the same eyes but the other fish was only in a split second could he really have transfered something into tank so quick? I could see he was unwell and few hours later the eyes went red so done the 50% water change on it to wake up with him having no eyes and still alive (dead now) and I know there was no fish attacking the pleco as I've had him for ages and biggest fish in tank and the other fish was only 3 of them and he was the biggest in his and there's only 1 of the 3 left from that tank now..

I'm now scared the hole tank will get wiped out I even vacuumed sand of that 1 with pleco when he was just red eyes, the other tank had no substrate, I don't know how it striked so fast in space of 16 hours he looked sick then red eyes few hours later then morning no eyes

What are your parameters? How did you cycle the tank before adding fish? I'm beginning to suspect ammonia burns.

I think it could be that I tested it and was quite high, but two different tanks with same problem a day apart and 1 running for a month and the 1 the pleco died in has been running since january and I've added no new fish in months, how can I get ammonia down? Just water changes or is there something else I can get? Thank you for the replies

But what are the exact parameters?

Would you test your tap water and your tanks and give us their exact parameters please?!

Ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH and temp.

The only way we can help you is if you give us the information we need to start with. Test your tank and tap water. Then we can figure out a plan.

Quit moving your fish into buckets. It makes them more stressed. Doing water changes with a good dechlorinator is the only way to lower ammonia. Getting your tank cycled will solve most issues.

Ok, you have a small amount of ammonia and nitrates in your tap water by the looks of it. Your tank has a little more ammonia but the same amount of nitrates. It also has a small amount of nitrites though which suggests that you're partway through a cycle!

So what do I do then?

Don't know how it's uncycled it's been running since January

It's really hard to tell with the colour of what they're sitting on. It's quite likely that the nitrite tube only looks a little dark because of that. Can you post a picture of the tubes against a white surface?

As for how a tank can become uncycled thereare a few ways. Have you rinsed your filter media recently or changed it? Did you do a water change and forget to add dechlorinator? Did you have a pH crash?
