Sump tank setup

I'm new to the process of having a sump tank to go along with a main tank and was wondering if a setup like this with an overflow and a canister would work or if it's just a dumb idea

Welcome to Fishlore! IMO, it would be better to just skip the sump and just have the canister filter. What size tank is this?

It’s salt, canisters are bad for saltwater

I would skip the canister and just do the sump

Sumps are way easier to do maintenance on and if you have a big tank, they are often the way to go. If you do want to use both, than use the canister as the return pump. Put the canisters intake house in the last chamber of the sump - or put the canister in the sump itself if there is a space issue - and have the canister return the water to the tank. Or maybe that is what you were already planning?
Why do you want both? Are you expecting a really heavy load? If you are worried about bio filtration, the sump should be able to handle the tank very well all by itself. That is a sump's speciality. If you are worried about mechanical filtration, that is the canister's greatest strength.
Honestly, if I was running both, I would have the canister drawing directly from the tank. Let it pull in and mechanically filter the tank water instead of trying to catch whatever leftovers it can find after the water has been through the sump.

What are you planning to keep OP?

Edit: Canisters are quieter. That can be a big issue, depending on where you put your tank.

A Canister with a sump is a needless pain and hassle. Just do the sump and you will be much happier.

For a saltwater tank Canisters are the least desirable option as tend to be the most trouble prone. Sumps are definitely the way to go for a 4 foot long or larger Marine Tank.
