Sump contents (filter stuff types)

I build a sump this weekend and need to know what to put in it for filtration. Right know I have a canister filter with bio-balls, ceramic tubes, poly fiber filter floss, chemipure elite, and carbon filter pads.

Can I just use the canister filtration in the sump or do I need to by new filtration and let the sump acclimate to the tank before the canister is taken off?

It also has a refugium that I plan to put in sand, live rock rubble, and chaeto. Anything else I can put in?

one more thing... Where could I by all this stuff? My LFS don't carry everything...

That sounds great but what does the tank have in it at this time? Live rock? How long and is the rock cycled?

Live rock, two clowns, three chromis, one kole tang, 52 pounds of live rock, various snails and crabs, mushroom coral, and some polyps. About eight months on the tank.

You can pull the canister with no problems the LR is your biological function for the tank.
If you choose to use filter material then do so but add a new piece, Bio balls toss them in the trash,ChemI pure you can add that and as for the carbon I would only use it to polish the water and not use it constantly and here is the reason for that, prolonged exposure of carbon usage can cause lateral line dieses in certain fish especially in tangs.
You have made a good choose changing to a sump good luck and do you have a skimmer yet ?

Thanks Stang.

I do have a skimmer in the sump. Today I've moved everything to the sump including heater, skimmer, LR rubble, and chaeto. I will be adding more LR because I under estimated how much room there was.

Also, there is enough space in first chamber to have tank water flow through filter floss of some type first. (I assume the Chemi-pure can go here too.) The filter was originally going to be on the pump side between baffles.

I was wondering about the pump side, should I have a 'safety' switch that will turn the pump off if water is too low?

That is fine to put the pads or floss if you will not sure what type you have or what not, Like I said before I don't use that being that I have corals but however if it is all fish then you would want a pad there to catch debris although the floss or whatever is there that is a chore to keep clean and should be rinsed daily if you have an abundance of fish to tend to. Not sure of load etc. You should and if you want to use chemI pure should be on the other side of floss meaning that water enters floss or pads then down the line you can use the chemI pure. Not sure why you would want to use that but in my eyes is a total waste of money and not to mention time. The only thing that works with that substance is the reaction to the water that pulls debris out of the water so since you have a skimmer don't waste your money!!
On the question about the sump being low just check it and add R/O water as needed and as you will learn down the road you will see when it is time to add water this would be a great time to draw a line on the sump for a low mark, and to check for to much water you would turn the pump off and let it drain to the sump to a level that it won't over flow the sump meaning that the adding of water to fill the sump hope that makes since to you,and draw a line for fullness with a marker. Not sure how your sump is designed a pic would be great if you can.
