I am sorry for asking this I know there were several other post about this but none fully answered my questions. I am trying to find some enrichment that my axolotl would enjoy that’s cheap completely safe and preferably something I can find around my house. I have a 20 gallon long tank with one axolotl about 4 months old.
Any suggestions are helpful thank you so much.
The picture below is my tank before I added water in it. Just for a visual. I have since added a lid.

Moss balls? Bettas like to play with them so maybe your axolotl would like to try it?

Easiest and cheapest things you can do is rearrange the scape so it's a new environment for him to explore and hide some food around for him to locate and eat.

Same old same gets comfortable and boring, he might like the idea of everything moving around or in different stacks or positions and getting to explore the changes.
Maybe dig up an earthworm or find some snails around to eat also free and might be around the house.

If you can add more rocks and hides and plants even better.
You might want to upgrade the tank to a 40 breeder at some point just for more room for more environment structures and room to explore around.

My Axie used to love hiding in a drainpipe, ideally one with 3 entry ways rather than the usual tube

Something like this...

Center CB 112.5deg branch 68mm Black | Wolseley

He could hide inside or bask on top quite happily

Also loved by mine were ExoTerra silk hanging plants...they have suction cups to hold them in place and when placed across the back and/or sides, they give privacy and security...and fun for playing hide and seek

I used the Ficus Exo Terra : Hanging Rainforest Plants

As long as you have sand or bare bottom, no heater, no overhead lighting (just normal daylight) due to no eyelids and bright lighting hurting them and ensure all items in the aquarium such as stones are larger than your fist, the Axie will be perfectly happy

Why bigger than your fist for stones....anything that will fit in their mouth, will end up there, so any decor items with weights on, ensure the weights are firmly on

Axies will and can jump so make sure the hood or lid is fitting firmly in place, they are more or less nocturnal and mine often had the zoomies at night and frequently breached the surface in play.
