Substrate Thickness - Too Thick?

I finally finished filling my tank, but now I’m worried that the substrate is too thick? The lowest level is 4in and the highest is 7in. I layered eco-complete, organic soil, and capped it with aquarium sand. I do plan to add more live plants. If this is too thick, how do I go about removing it without making a mess?

I don’t think you can add too much substrate really, but I’m not 100% sure myself. Your tank looks awesome by the way

You want to keep sand at or below 3" to prevent anaerobic bacteria from forming hydrogen sulfide gas.

Thank you! It’s my first attempt to design a tank.

The sand cap is only 1-2 inches thick. so bc that should be good then? Eco-complete is 1 inch and the soil is 3-4 inches.

Beautiful tank - I had 3.5"-4" of gravel sand mix in my 75G but replaced all my substrate this weekend with 2" pool filter sand only. It was a mess and took extra time but now that the work is done the fish seem to like it - especially the burrowers as they don't have to deal with gravel now.

Im curious if there's a limit to substrate depth. I remember seeing 2 meters somewhere...

I filled a new tank almost halfway with substrate. I dont think there can be too much for most home aquariums

Ok that’s good. I was worried I put too much and there wouldn’t be enough swimming space or water.
