Substrate For African Dwarf Frogs

I'm probably going to be rescaping my tanks with my ADFs and I would like to use Fluorite. I want to go with black but I don't think they will show up very well. But even the regular seems pretty dark. Anyone have suggestions or experience?

I also have ghost shrimp and Amano shrimp and am planning on get some neon tetras, so I'm looking for something that would make them all look their best.

 

ive seen my girl miss her food and spit out some smaller pebbles from my gravel. just be careful if its a fine substrate. and I have a light on my tank but my ADFs looked good and were plenty visible on a dark gravel.

Where you using fluorite when she ate it? I want to get bigger gravel but I’m also going to putting a feeding dish in this time.

I was just using a fine gravel. if its small enough to fit in their mouths there's always a risk they’ll swallow it. could turn out just fine though, its up to you.

 

Oh I didn’t realize that fluorite was fine enough for them that it would be a problem. What should I use instead?

 

oh I have no idea if it is! sorry. I was just warning you about small pebbles. and I thought the dark would look fine if the tank is lit.

 

Hey yall just wanted to consult the oracles about general tips for taking care of african dwarf frogs. I'm cycling a new 10 gallon planted tank that I intend to move my mystery snail and a few shrimp into (they're in a smaller nano tank rn) and I was hoping to include a couple African Dwarf frogs in the community as well. I've read some conflicting info regarding appropriate substrates for these guys. I have flourite black in there right now, do yall think I should cover that with a layer of larger substrate? Or sand?? How likely is it for them to actually swallow some of the gravel?? And if the answer is just to not go with the frogs that's fine too, I wanna do the right thing. I just think they're dope and would like to get some if I could

 

The shrimp might be in danger from the frogs. The gravel would have to be large enough to not be swallowed, sand works.

I used pea gravel in my frog tank. It would be a good idea to keep your frogs in a species only tank. They are easier to feed and you get to see more of their personality come out. Gotta be carful with small fish that could fit in a frogs mouth, unusual for them to go after fish, it's not unheard of.
Same with fish who can fit a frog in their mouth.

ghelfaireis right, the frogs may become a tasty snack.

Hello. So I've had my ADF's since Christmas. I had them with some neon tetras & mystery snails. Tetras were very small & I'm pretty sure they were a snack for my ADF's so I moved them & I personally like the frogs without fish. I have 6 ADF'S & 2 mystery snails together & I love it. I can watch them for hours. ADF's crack me up. They look like they are playing tag all the time or hide & seek. They hide on top of MS. They are more active without fish. Just FYI... I feed them thawed bloodworms every day (sometimes I skip a day) & I also make a "frog snelo" I feed them. They seem to be happy & healthy. Ended up with 2 girls & 4 boys & I recommend more girls than boys (they are constantly "hugging ") & my poor girls get worn out. Unfortunately they are younger at pet stores so its hard to sex them. This is just my opinion & what is working for me & my babies, I hope it helps you.
