stones in aquarium?

so I see all sorts of aquariums with stones like slate and granite sheets to make caves and to make the tank prettier instead of using pottery. I had an idea of using slate "natural stone tile" from the home depot. could that be used in an aquarium? same thing with the granite stone tile. I know they are used for flooring and stuff but could they be broken up and used in a freshwater tank?

Probably. Unless they are glazed or have some sort of chemical residue on them. If its just a tile of natural granite you should be fine. But that's just IMO, because I've never heard of people using tiles in a tank. Hope it works well for you!

That's what I was thinking. I found some natural unsealed unglazed slate at the home depot. Working on cleaning them and breaking them up. I'll post again to let anyone interested know what happens

Definitely looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Two things here that might be some help. I've seen DIY like this go wrong. I recommend a simple test and a cleaning as a preventative.

Use the acid test. Vinegar works for this, pour a little on the tile. If it reacts by fizzing or such, it will effect your water chemistry and shouldn't be used.

If it passes the test, clean it off, use a cleansing dip (I used 1:19 bleach to water, just plain chlorine bleach, no stain buster formula or scents), rinse, and then let it sit in conditioned water (I use prime)

I've heard that with vinegar too. Good idea

Bmur, The acid checks for calcium carbonate that increases the pH and hardness of the tank water. Some fish (notably Oscars) need it that way. The pH increase can stress fish as well that aren't used those levels, so avoiding it altogether, unless you understand and desire the consequence, is the best option.

Just an FYI
