A dozen tetras, a herd of khuli loaches and some ghost shrimp would do you. Or go 6 and 6 tetras and rasboras.
Or do cories on the bottom, just make sure to temperature match all you chose.

    What about this?
    10x Flame tetra
10x Kuhli loaches or 8x Panda cories
    1x Blue male dwarf gourami

30 neon tetras! Pretty sure that's not overstocked.

    I think that's too many for a 20 gal.

Also, forgot to ask: 20 gal long or high?

Yeah 30 would be a little high. You could go 15-20 neons though. HAHA.

Many species would work! Did you like any in particular? They are a very speciose group.

Pretty sure 25 would be good for a 20 gallon high. 30 is definitely ok for a 20 gallon long.

I disagree, I think that's too many for a tank that's 24 inches and 30 inches long, respectively. They still need individual swimming room.

You could do gudgeons or rams, yes. I like the Aphyosemion species. F. gardneri is pretty common and very pretty.

The gudgeons get pretty colorful right? And how many could I have and what else could go with them

Pretty colorful, yes. Not as colorful as some of the killis though!

You could keep a peaceful bottom dweller (cories or kuhlis) and peaceful schooling fish with them. What color/shape fish do you like?

Peacock gudgeons with Rams or just stick with one species

In a 20 gal high, I'd do just one species.

I don't think you ever answered if it's a 20 gal high or long. That will affect your stocking.

If it's 20 long what about

    6x male snakeskin guppies

    10x ember tetras

And try your luck with 12x RCS
