I would like to stir up the sand substrate to keep anaerobic conditions in check and keep organics from building up without up rooting plants.

What (and how) do you folks stir your substrate.

    Chop sticks work.

If you have a wire coat hanger you can part with, straighten it out and use it to pass through your sand.

Just be careful around plants if your tank is planted

I toyed with, thought about, cringed about, using trumpet snails. Feels like it would be adding roaches to clean the trash can, but that's what they do.

I did it. And probably will to my new one when the cycle finishes

Don't over feed your fish and you will probably never see them. I know where your coming from though. I've had them in sand tanks and for me they ended up being a good indicator that I was feeding too much. But once I realized I was over feeding I had so many of them it drove me crazy. So on came the assassin snails...

I put 5-10 in mine and found some tiny ones when I looked last night. But still no huge population bloom yet.
