So I just got back from my LFS after browsing what kind of fish I liked and every saltwater fish is over $100! Is that a normal price for a fish? Are there fish that are cheaper, or am I just in way over my head?

I don't know much about saltwater fish, but it sounds expected to me. Many saltwater fishes are rare and are hard to be captive bred, so they are wild caught. Since they aren't found locally, they would most likely have to be shipped from across the world from some sort of tropical place. Some saltwater species are in demand from their limited numbers and with demand comes a raise in value. @stella1979 or @Mike should know more.

Drat. And they had such limited selection too. I guess it would be hard to get them all the way up to Canada, especially in the winter.

I am setting up a 40 Gallon saltwater tank and the fish are the least expensive part, the equipment and live rock cost big $$$.
